Marvel Studios is moving forward with Captain Marvel 2 as a writer has been hired ahead of a possible 2022 release. After years of requests from fans, Marvel finally released their first female-led film in 2019 with Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. Audiences showed up in droves to see the 1990s set film, which received mostly positive reviews, resulting in a total box office haul north of $1 billion.

The response to Captain Marvel and her role in Avengers: Endgame made fans even more excited to see a sequel. However, many were then surprised to see Captain Marvel 2 not part of Marvel's Phase 4 announcement last summer. Kevin Feige did confirm that a sequel was in the works, but no other news has been announced. Meanwhile, Captain Marvel superfan Kamala Khan has received her own Ms. Marvel Disney+ series. Following these reveals, Marvel is now making progress on the Captain Marvel sequel.

According to THR, Marvel Studios is in final negotiations with WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell to write the script of Captain Marvel 2. Details of the story have yet to be revealed, but this report does note that the sequel will take place in the present day of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios is said to want a 2022 release date for Captain Marvel 2 and are currently searching for a female director to helm the film, as Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck - who co-directed the first installment - are not returning, but may tackle a Disney+ project instead.

Brie Larson as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel

After the incredible success of Captain Marvel, there was never a doubt that a sequel would be made, but Marvel Studios is clearly changing the formula for Captain Marvel 2. The original film had three different writers work on the script in addition to the two directors, so McDonnell could present a singular vision of the story from the start. As mentioned before, the decision to find a new director continues to give Captain Marvel 2 fresh voices. The sequel will also ditch the nostalgia that the 1995 setting of the first film brought by keeping Carol in the modern-day.

With these details, it doesn't appear that the wait for Captain Marvel 2 will be too long. Marvel Studios is officially releasing four films in 2022, but only Black Panther 2 has a confirmed release date in May. If Captain Marvel 2 is going to arrive that year, Marvel has options, with the February or July dates the most likely landing spots for the film. In any case, news of McDonnell's hire and Marvel searching for a director already could lead to more Captain Marvel 2 arriving before too long.
