Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels is poised to begin filming in Italy next week. The sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel will see Brie Larson return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Carol Danvers, a.k.a Captain Marvel. The highly anticipated film is set to hit theaters next year.

The original Captain Marvel was a massive success when it hit theaters in 2019. Directly preceding the events of Avengers: Endgame, the film told the origin story of its titular heroine as a human warrior living amongst the Kree and eventually finding her way back to Earth. The film elaborated on the backstory of Carol Danvers’ relationship with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and set the stage for several other Captain Marvel-related superheroes to eventually enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the film’s record-breaking box office, a Phase 4 sequel subsequently received a greenlight.

With that greenlight in place, The Marvels has officially begun production. According to a report from Gazettea Del Sud, The Marvels is officially gearing up for the Italian phase of its shoot. Inspections have begun in the small Italian town of Tropea, with production expected to begin in the municipality on August 27. Knowing that the original Captain Marvel told a largely United States-based story as it explored Carol's backstory and return to her roots, the notion of the franchise moving to Europe for a portion of its shoot already promises something new for fans.

One thing worth noting about this report is that this is not the beginning of principal photography. Earlier this month, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson already confirmed that The Marvels had begun production and that the sequel is utilizing some truly impressive sets. So, while this is not the beginning of production in earnest, the shoot next week does begin the process of on-location shooting in Italy.

Despite knowing that The Marvels is going to begin shooting in Italy next week, fans are still left with very little information about the exact plot details of the film. At this stage, all that's really known is that the film is expected to bring back key Captain Marvel adjacent characters including Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo, and Iman Vallani’s Kamala Khan. Beyond that, director Nia DaCosta (who is currently gearing up for the release of Candyman) has recently said that the film will tackle issues of pain and trauma. What exactly that means in the context of The Marvels remains to be seen, but audiences will get a chance to see the film when The Marvels debuts in theaters on November 11, 2022.
