The Marvels has a chance to explore the fallout of Thanos' universe-altering snap in a way that Avengers: Endgame was unable to. The role of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe has so far been directly tied to Thanos' snap. His act in Avengers: Infinity War forced Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) to page her at long last, bringing Danvers (Brie Larson) to the Avengers just in time. It is widely expected that more of the fallout from this moment will be included in The Marvels, which could fill in an MCU gap in the process.

The MCU has so far shown a few different perspectives of what happened after Thanos' snap, however, all of them have been about Earth and its impact on humanity up to this point. This makes sense considering how many of the franchise's characters are based on Earth. Avengers: Endgame kept the impact of Thanos' snap focused on the core Avengers, but the movie also confirmed Captain Marvel was out in space, assisting the many planets who didn't have their own team of superheroes to help clean up. Carol spent a good portion of the five-year time jump in between Infinity War and Endgame patrolling the galaxy, helping where needed.

Based on Carol Danvers' past, Captain Marvel 2 is now in a strong position to show the full impact of Thanos' snap. Her adventures in space were teased in Avengers: Endgame, as she mentions people were dusted across the universe. This highlights how there are hundreds if not thousands of planets and civilizations dealing with the fallout of Thanos' snap, and Carol was doing her best to help them regroup. Due to the nature of Avengers: Endgame's story, the movie couldn't actually spend any time showing these heroic efforts. Since The Marvels will put Brie Larson's MCU superhero back at the forefront, the sequel becomes the perfect place to explore the effect Thanos' snap and sudden reversal had across the galaxy.

Although much of the MCU Phase 4 content has dealt with Avengers: Endgame fallout in some form, the stories have so far focused on either how the snaps impacted humanity—most notably in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's grounded storytelling—or the multiverse unfolding. This means that the space side of Thanos' snap has not been given any attention so far. There have already been projects that show what it was like for those who survived the snap and the reversal process from Hulk's Endgame snap. The Marvels might still be partially tied to Earth, but the movie is also where the cosmic scope of Thanos' snap can finally be established.

Carol Danvers' place as a cosmic superhero means that it makes sense for The Marvels to take on the responsibility of showcasing other planets and their populations dealing with the catastrophic effects of Thanos' snap. MCU Phase 4 hasn't had any intergalactic stories so far—outside of Eternals, which still primarily focussed on Earth—and The Marvels could be the first true space adventure in quite some time. Thor: Love and Thunder should include some exploration of the galaxy, but Thor's story has seemingly moved past the trauma of Thanos' snap and moved on to the character's future. Since Avengers: Endgame gave Captain Marvel such a small role, her sequel needs to flesh out her story one way or another. By exploring the impact of Thanos' snap in The Marvels, the MCU can build up Carol Danvers' heroics and fill in a significant gap at the same time.
