What If..? composer Laura Karpman has been confirmed to be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as she will craft the score for Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels. Karpman previously scored the MCU's first animated series that aired on Disney+ in 2020. The composer picks up duties from Pinar Toprak, who composed the first film's score.

As reported by Variety, Karpman will join the sequel to 2019's Captain Marvel and work alongside director Nia DaCosta. In a statement, Karpman said that she was thrilled to work with DiCosta, looking forward to the collaboration. Karpman is the MCU's second female composer to work on an MCU film's score following Toprak's work on the 2019 film.

“I am thrilled to be going on this wild adventure with Nia DaCosta and Carol Danvers and am really looking forward to the collaboration."

Karpman's hiring is the latest news on the sequel to be released, following leaks that teased a cameo appearance by Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie. Brie Larson has also offered glimpses of the film through her social media accounts, sharing photos with co-star Zawe Ashton, who will play the villain in the upcoming sequel. Larson and Ashton wore sweaters reading "Villain Lovers' Club" and "Joy Division" respectively, with the Carol Danvers actress urging fans to theorize on Ashton's as-of-yet unconfirmed character. Larson has also offered glimpses at the film's newly redesigned logo, which combines Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel's symbols into one. Directed by DaCosta, The Marvels will be part of phase 4 of the MCU. The film will star Larson, Vellani, Parris, and Ashton. The film is scheduled for a February 17, 2023 release.
