To celebrate the end of The Marvels' filming, Marvel Studios distributed the movie's wrap gift, which features Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) together. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the upcoming project was originally known simply as Captain Marvel 2. However, with the additional involvement of both Monica and Kamala, the sequel's title was reworked to accurately reflect the team-up that the movie centers on, and was officially titled The Marvels.

Both Carol and Monica were introduced in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's 1995-set MCU project, Captain Marvel, and the character of Monica was still a young girl then. The daughter of Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), Monica had a great relationship with her "aunt Carol." However, they were once again separated at the end of the movie after Captain Marvel decided to accompany the Skrulls in their quest to find their new home planet. Fast forward to 2023, and Monica is all grown up and now a member of SWORD, as seen in WandaVision. The Marvel Studios' Disney+ series revealed that while the younger Rambeau disappeared for five years after she was affected by Thanos' (Josh Brolin) Snap, her mother has passed away. Meanwhile, Kamala Khan hasn't yet made her MCU debut, but her solo project on Disney+, Ms. Marvel, is already set for a 2022 release.

Production for The Marvels started in the late summer of 2021 and has now reportedly wrapped. In celebration of the end of filming, Marvel Studios gave the cast and crew wrap gifts — one of which features a card that includes all three titular heroes in the movie. In the cute cartoon portrayal of Captain Marvel, Monica and Kamala, each character is sporting their respective superhero logos on their outfits. Plot details for The Marvels are still scant for the moment. Other than the fact that it will see the three heroes team up, not much else has been revealed about the project thus far. In fact, there's still no word on who the narrative's primary villain will be. Understandably, however, Marvel may be intentionally trying to keep information about Captain Marvel 2 on the down-low, since it could spoil certain elements of Ms. Marvel. Perhaps the studio would be more open to revealing more information about its narrative once the Vellani-led project is released. Given that, the image itself doesn't offer new information pertaining to the movie, other than the fact that Carol is seemingly sporting the same hairstyle as when she appeared in the Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings, seemingly placing the film in a similar spot in the MCU timeline.

Both Monica and Kamala already have existing ties to Carol; the former knows her personally because of Maria and the latter is a big fan of the superhero, as seen in the first Ms. Marvel sneak peek released on Disney+ Day. The question now is how all three of them will come to contact with each other. As per WandaVision, it doesn't seem like Monica has maintained contact with Carol, since they might have had a falling out. Assuming that this is the case, their reunion could be a central narrative in The Marvels.
