The Marvels star Brie Larson confirms that filming has begun for her MCU sequel. With all the shuffling of productions and release dates, many wondered if The Marvels might be pushed as well. For now, it looks like the film, titled initially Captain Marvel 2, is still going to be released in 2022 as part of Phase 4 of the MCU.

Larson’s Carol Danvers was first hinted at during the end credits sequence for Avengers: Infinity War back in 2018. She was officially introduced and became “Captain Marvel” in the movie of the same name in early 2019 and returned to help defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Her next appearance will be in the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel, a film that had its name changed earlier this year to The Marvels as it is set to incorporate both Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel) and Monica Rambeau (introduced in WandaVision) as part of the main story.

During a recent SiriusXM interview, Brie Larson confirmed that shooting for The Marvels had begun. While she was careful not to give away any details, Larson mentions many big sets and expansive worlds. She also pointed out how lucky she felt to have the role, all of which can be read in the transcription of the interview below:

"It's pretty surreal though, I mean when you're doing films like this, they're unlike anything else. Huge sets, huge amount of people on set. A lot of specialist, specialty things. It's a really unique experience. I'm a huge fan of Disneyland and for me it feels like I get to go to my own private Disneyland every single day. Because they're building all these insane worlds that no one else knows about, no one gets to see...well, I mean you'll see it when the movie comes out, but for now? It's just mine. I'm in sets that are bigger than you could imagine right now. It's really special, and it's really just fun and bizarre. It's also just something I never thought I would do in my life. Like I was pretty sure I was just going to be a side-character in indie movies for the rest of my life...So this is just beyond my expectations. I don't know, I'm pretty just happy and stoked everyday. I don't find it to be that hard. I mean, these movies are quite epic to make and they take so many months...Right now I just feel pretty happy every day. I just smile a lot, I just feel pretty lucky I get to do this, get to play every day."

Larson’s attitude toward the shoot for The Marvels is likely a significant relief for those in charge at Marvel. There was likely a worry that focusing the attention from Carol Danvers to a team of three heroes for the sequel might ruffle some feathers. Luckily, Larson seems excited to be there and working on the movie. She also mentions that she never expected the opportunity to be the star of such a blockbuster franchise, joking she was pretty sure she was destined to be an Independent movie actor.

With The Marvels confirmed to be underway, fan eyes might start turning toward the cosmic storytelling of the MCU Phase 4. There has been so much excitement for the Multiverse and timelines/Kang storylines it is easy to forget the promise of films like The Eternals and Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3. How those stories will link up is an interesting question. However, introducing a team like The Fantastic Four or The X-Men with known multiverse/timeline and cosmic storylines might seem an excellent way to go about it.
