With Peggy Carter taking the mantle of Captain Carter in Marvel’s What If…? TV series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe should give her a proper chance as Captain Britain in a movie. The MCU has brought a number of characters from Marvel Comics to the big screen, and while it does have female heroes like Black Widow, Captain Marvel, and Gamora, it has failed most of its female characters, especially those who don’t have superpowers. Characters like Jane Foster and Darcy Lewis, for example, were a big presence in Thor’s first two movies and were later forgotten, only to be brought back in Phase 4, and the same is happening with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).

Peggy Carter was introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger, and she’s a key character in the MCU’s history, as she was a code-breaker, joined the SSR to fight HYDRA, saved Abraham Erskine from Johann Schmidt, and her achievements allowed the SSR to start Project Rebirth and develop the Super Soldier Serum – and, of course, she was one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D. alongside Howard Stark and Chester Phillips. When viewers met Peggy, she was assigned to Phillips’ training base where she met the candidates for Project Rebirth, including Steve Rogers. Peggy and Steve ended up falling in love, but couldn’t be together as Steve crashed in the Arctic and remained frozen for decades. However, Peggy got another chance with the TV series Agent Carter, which explored her backstory, and she returned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier as a 90-year-old woman.

After that, Peggy only appeared in flashbacks and hallucinations, such as the one induced by Wanda Maximoff in Avengers: Age of Ultron, making Steve believe he was finally having that promised last dance with Peggy. She died off-screen in Captain America: Civil War and made a final appearance in Avengers: Endgame, first during Steve and Tony Stark’s travel to 1970 and later at the end of the movie, in that controversial scene where Steve decided to stay in the past with her and have the life together they couldn’t have before. Now, Peggy is coming back in the animated series What If…?, which explores what would happen if some of the biggest moments in the MCU happened differently, and among those events is Peggy taking the Super Soldier Serum and becoming Captain Carter, an adaptation of Captain Britain, and which should be Peggy’s role in the MCU from now on.

Captain Carter on a defensive pose in What If.

In the comics, Captain Britain is the superhero persona of Brian Braddock, who got his powers from magician Merlyn and his daughter Roma, and he was assigned to uphold the laws of Britain. As has happened with other Marvel characters when making the transition to the MCU, Captain Britain went through a reimagining for What If…? and Peggy will take his place as Captain Carter. Now, following the triggering of the multiverse at the end of Loki and with future MCU movies exploring it, What If…? could be the first look at the multiverse, thus making way for some of these alternate versions to become a proper part of the MCU. Peggy taking over as Captain Britain in her own MCU movie would be the best way to add more female characters (especially one who was removed various times), and Peggy already has a strong foundation in the MCU.

Peggy Carter is one of the most beloved female characters (with no superpowers) in the MCU, and fans are excited to see her back, even in animation form, in What If…?, and if Marvel plays its cards correctly, Peggy as Captain Carter could be the next big hero of this connected universe, and most importantly, it would be a major improvement for the MCU and how it handles its female characters.
