While Steve Rogers' Captain America is the current wielder of his iconic vibranium shield, Marvel Comics revealed years ago who would come to own it in the far future. Being an such iconic symbol of freedom, justice, and liberty, it makes sense that the shield would never be forgotten to the passage of time and would instead find a new hero to carry it. Furthermore, the shield's new wielder would end up being someone who's just as worthy of the shield as Rogers himself: Vance Astrovik, also known as Major Victory.

A member of the original Guardians of the Galaxy (before Star-Lord, Rocket, or Groot), Vance Astrovik was created by Arnold Drake and Gene Colan for the 1969 team of galactic heroes. In his origins, Vance was an astronaut of the 21st Century who volunteered for a mission that would take him beyond the Milky War galaxy. As a result, Astrovik was put in suspended animation for a thousand years. However, Vance wouldn't wake until his ship crashed in the year 3006, making him a man out of time (just like Steve Rogers). Eventually, Vance would take the name Major Victory and join the Guardians of the Galaxy.

It would not be until Guardians of the Galaxy's 1990 run that Victory becomes aware of legends that told of an ancient relic, a colorful disc said to give the wielder invincibility. Correctly believing it to be Captain America's shield, Major Victory convinces his team to help him find the shield given his adoration of the 21st century hero who stood for freedom and justice (he even named their starship the Captain America). Eventually, Major Victory and his allies find the shield, leading to Vance earning the relic during a conflict with the cosmic villain known as Interface in 1990's Guardians of the Galaxy #6 by Jim Valentino, proving himself worthy of carrying on Captain America's legacy.

Major-Victory-Claiming-Shield

Due to his full understanding of what Captain America stood for, Major Victory is the perfect hero to wield the shield and continue Rogers's legacy into the far future. Through Vance, the ideals of the Star-Spangled Man can survive thousands of years into the future, being as true and as necessary as they were back in World War II when Captain America was first fighting before he was likewise frozen until the present. However, Major Victory goes even further by being a member of the original Guardians, protecting those who can't help themselves across the cosmos rather than just on Earth.

Unfortunately, Major Victory hasn't been seen in more recent Marvel Comics due to the existence of the current Guardians of the Galaxy and their MCU counterparts. While his last significant appearance was in 2015 with a time travel team-up between the future Guardians of the Galaxy and the 21st-Century Guardians, it was just before the multiversal chaos that was Secret Wars. Despite the question marks surrounding Major Victory's current status, it's nice to know that Captain America's legacy is in good hands and will live on in the Marvel Universe beyond Steve Rogers.
