Sebastian Stan Says It Doesn't Make Sense For Bucky To Be Next Captain America

Sebastian Stan said that it doesn't make sense for Bucky to be the MCU's next Captain America. Avengers: Endgame was the culmination of everything that has transpired in the franchise since Iron Manas well as a fitting send-off to some of the universe's beloved heroes. Unlike Natasha Romanoff and Tony Stark, Steve Rogers  was able to pass his Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson. Some fans, however, feel that the shield should've gone to Bucky.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, old Steve came back to the current MCU timeline after returning all the Infinity Stones to their original locations and living a life with Peggy Carter in the 1940s. His last mission was to hand off the mantle of Captain America, and he chose Sam to take on the responsibility. While the decision has precedence in the comic books, arguments are being made that Bucky deserved it more being Cap's oldest friend, not to mention also getting the super soldier serum.

From Stan's perspective, however, handing a recovering Bucky the shield wouldn't have been the smartest decision on Steve's part. Speaking with Yahoo alongside Mackie at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, he made a solid case why Falcon deserves to be Captain America over his own character. He said:

"It makes no sense for him to... Why would you give it to the guy that's been trying to have a whole new history outside of the thing he's been trapped by? I remember I found out [about Falcon getting the shield] the day we were shooting. I was like 'Oh wow, this is the deal.' But it makes sense. He's [Sam Wilson] has been his [Captain America's] right-hand for a long time at this point."

Chris Evans as Captain America Steve Rogers and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes Winter Soldier in Civil War

Stan and Mackie are signed on to star in the first Marvel Studios TV series for Disney+ titled The Falcon and The Winter Soldier scheduled to release next year. The project was confirmed by Kevin Feige during MCU's massive Hall H panel at SDCC where the two actors also made an appearance, with Mackie bringing the shield on stage. Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, the unlikely duo, brought together by their shared bond with Steve, will face an old foe in Baron Zemo (Daniel Brühl) - the mastermind behind the events of Captain America: Civil War.

In terms of power, Bucky is more fitting to take on the role as the MCU's Captain America, especially with Sam not having any special physical abilities. But the hero's powers aren't exactly what Captain America is best known for. Instead, he's famous for his leadership and unshakeable belief in the good of people, and over the years, Sam has proven himself to have the same core principles as Steve. Like Stan said, it doesn't make sense to give Bucky this immense responsibility knowing that he's still on his road to recovery after being brainwashed and programmed as an elite operative by HYDRA.
