With the MCU poised to begin Phase 4 with the inaugural Disney+ show WandaVision, the Marvel world has been shaken to its foundations with the news that Captain America is set to return. The news that Chris Evans is in talks for at least one and perhaps two Marvel projects is an exciting one, but the timing of the announcement will no doubt have some fans wondering whether there is a link between the two.

WandaVision kicks off the new era of the MCU with Scarlet Witch living out the extreme emotional traumas of her past, from the death of her parents right through to Vision's death at the end of Infinity War. With reality seemingly changed to reflect her own idea of a happy ending, the Disney+ show sees the return of Vision as Wanda navigates what is real and what isn't in her new classic sitcom-themed life. And given that one departed MCU character will return for WandaVision, there's no saying what the strange rules of the show will make possible, just as the arrival of the Multiverse in its wake changes the possibilities of the MCU's future massively too.

So could that reality-bending also mean the return of Captain America? Chris Evans' version of the character was thought firmly retired, given his own happy ending at the end of Avengers: Endgame but the latest news puts him back in the frame for future MCU story-lines. The reality, sadly for fans hoping to see him pick up the famous shield again in Phase 4 is that Captain America will not appear in WandaVision. The timeline, ironically, simply does not fit as Evans' talks are said to be ongoing and WandaVision is long since complete.

That doesn't mean it wouldn't have been a great narrative set-up for WandaVision to exploit, though. Aside from the brand boost of seeing an original Avenger involved (and that may still happen with rumors of big surprises to come), Steve Rogers represents something of a trigger point for Wanda. Not in the same way that she might react to Tony Stark, who was, of course, the cause of her becoming Scarlet Witch in the first place, but because he represents everything that she wants: happiness despite trauma. Steve's trajectory at the end of Endgame could have actually been used as Wanda's inspiration to change the rules of reality to get her own missed opportunity back.

Sadly, Captain America won't be back for that parallel, and any chance of him appearing in the time-traveling Loki show, which would also make sense, is equally unlikely. Or at least a season one appearance is. The MCU has a couple of upcoming opportunities for Chris Evans' Cap to return - both thanks to upcoming time travel stories (around Loki's second season potentially) and also Kang's debut in Ant-Man 3 and beyond, and also through the multiverse. That great willingness to expand the limits of story boundaries - which is why WandaVision is the perfect opening for Phase 4 - is hugely exciting, but as with some of the bigger coming changes, fans will have to wait for Captain America's return for now.
