A new video compilation counts every time Captain America was punched in the MCU. He made his debut in comic books in 1941, then went on to be depicted in cartoons in the 1960s, but Steve Rogers wouldn’t make his debut in live-action form until the late ‘70s in a pair of CBS TV movies starring Reb Brown.

After that somewhat inauspicious debut, the character would next get a major live-action treatment in a notoriously bad 1990 movie starring famed author J.D. Salinger’s son Matt Salinger as the titular Captain America. Of course, the 2000s saw the arrival of a new wave of movies based on Marvel comics, with Iron Man leading the way in 2008. Captain America would get his turn to shine on-screen in the MCU in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, with Chris Evans in the role of Steve Rogers, the scrawny weakling who becomes a super-soldier. 2012’s The Avengers saw Captain America officially joining the titular super hero crew, and obviously the character would be an integral part of the MCU in multiple films after that, including 2019’s climactic Avengers: Endgame, which saw Evans presumably hanging up his shield.

A new video compilation from YouTuber Mr. Sunday Movies highlights one particular aspect of Evans’ illustrious tenure as the MCU’s Captain America, namely Captain America’s ability to take a punch. Indeed, as the clip shows, Rogers’ jaw endures a lot of punishment across the course of the character’s many appearances in a decade’s worth of films. See the video in the space below:

Unsurprisingly, the majority of the punches received by Captain America come from Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers’ ex-friend who went on to become the villainous (and later heroic) Winter Soldier. Red Skull also gets in quite a few licks in The First Avenger, while Iron Man of course gets in his fair share of shots in Captain America: Civil War. Thanos delivers one mighty lick in Avengers: Infinity War, a movie that gave Rogers’ face somewhat of a break as it's the only punch he takes, before Captain America has to square off against himself with violent results in Endgame. Thanos then returns to deal Rogers his final blows in the MCU, topping off the hit count at 91. The clip then ends with a neat little Captain Marvel-like montage of Rogers getting up off the ground after being repeatedly knocked down, a nice tribute to the character’s resilience.

Thankfully for Rogers, his character did finally get some peace at the climax of Endgame, as he gave up Captain America’s shield and went back in time to find happiness with long-lost love Peggy Carter. Goodness knows, Rogers took enough of a beating over the years to deserve such a reward. If nothing else, the Captain America punch compilation demonstrates how much of the action in the MCU really is just people punching each other. Thankfully, other elements of the movies, like the dialog, have generally been cleverer than that over the years.
