Captain America will slay Knull’s symbiote dragons in a tie-in to the upcoming Marvel Universe event King in Black.

King in Black: Captain America #1 is a tie-in written by Danny Lore with art by Mirko Colak to a forthcoming universe-shattering event debuting this December. King in Black will be the culmination of Donny Cates’ Venom run that began in 2019. In it, the god of the symbiotes Knull was revealed, planning to invade Earth and bond humanity with his army of symbiote dragons. It wasn’t until recently that Venom’s alter ego Eddie Brock made the Avengers aware of the imminent danger they are in.

As the heroes of the Marvel Universe team up to take on the god of the symbiotes, Captain America fights the dragons in New York City at the side of his closest friends - Bucky .AKA the Winter Soldier, and Sam Wilson, AKA Falcon. However, it seems that Steve Rogers has been affected by the enemy, as a strange darkness begins to overcome him. It’s up to the Winter Soldier and Falcon to pull him out of it, all while in the middle of a battle for the survival of humanity. The official synopsis for the first tie-in issue along with the cover by Salvador Larroca can be seen below:

  • KING IN BLACK: CAPTAIN AMERICA #1
  • Written by Danny Lore
  • Art by Mirko Colak
  • Cover by Salvador Larroca
  • Captain America is in a brutal battle to win the streets of Manhattan back from Knull’s forces, aided by the Winter Soldier and the Falcon…but there’s a darkness inside Steve that he’s struggling to shake. Can his closest friends help him through, or will he succumb to the shadows? Danny Lore (IRONHEART 2020) and Mirko Colak (DEADPOOL, PUNISHER) join forces for a twisted and terrifying story at the heart of the war against Knull!

Assuming that the event will be as dark as it has been teased, it’s unlikely to end without taking down a few heroes. Captain America might live past this issue, but it could come at a price. It’s possible this tie-in will follow Bucky and Sam as they try to find a way to restore Steve's heroic spirit, which has now been taken over by the symbiote. The cover for the debut issue depicts the dragons taking Captain America far away from the protection of his friends, giving the invaders the perfect opportunity to infect the hero. It could turn out that the “Captain America” title will be misleading, if it follows Falcon and Winter Soldier trying to break Steve free of the symbiote’s influence and the seeming horror tone of the upcoming event would fit such a premise that requires an exorcism.

Previews for King in Black have featured Captain America united with the Avengers, but this might have only been before he was consumed by the dark forces at hand. In fact, a recently released teaser trailer for King in Black #1 featured a cover in which Captain America had fully white eyes, potentially alluding to the symbiote darkness inside him. If someone as pure at heart as Steve Rogers can be consumed by the symbiote dragons, no hero is safe from Knull’s wrath. After the event kicks off this December, King in Black: Captain America #1 will release in February 2021.
