Warning: Spoilers for The United States of Captain America #3!

When it comes to costumes in Marvel Comics, there’re more than enough original and iconic looks to go around, and now Captain America has called out fellow Avenger, Quicksilver, for having one that isn’t exactly the coolest. Suffice it to say, a simple “diagonal lightning bolt” emblazoned across Pietro Maximoff’s chest doesn’t seem to be enough to impress Steve Rogers one bit.

Seen in the opening pages of The United States of Captain America #3’s first story, “Lookin’ For Uncle Sam”, by Christopher Cantwell and Dale Eaglesham, Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson are on the hunt for an imposter Captain America who’s been giving them a run for their money as of late in the most literal way possible. Attempting to deduce the identity of the evil speedster donning Captain America’s iconic star-spangled threads, Steve and Sam need to know what villain they’re up against if they’re to save and protect the fledgling “Captain’s Network” of DIY Caps popping up across the country.

Chasing the speedster across the arid landscape of Northern New Mexico, Steve and Sam end up losing the villain, only to immediately decide they’ll need to head to Kansas to meet up with another associate of the Captain’s Network, a member of the Kickapoo Tribe named Joe Gomez. But before they do, both Caps have a quick discussion about which villain is currently terrorizing them, inadvertently calling out a part of Quicksilver’s costume that just isn’t up to snuff in the process.

Captain America makes fun of Quicksilver's costume

Wondering aloud who could be under the red, white and blue, Sam Wilson concludes that, “Well, it’s not Quicksilver – he’s too proud to wear those stripes,” referencing how Pietro wouldn’t be caught dead wearing anything that celebrates the flag; his inflated ego and foreign upbringing no doubt being partially to blame. Going on to call out the idea of Pietro being “too proud” to wear his Cap threads, Steve replies, “Proud? Pietro wears a diagonal lightning bolt,” immediately slamming Quicksilver’s less than stellar look, while simultaneously telling fans exactly how he feels about a guy who clearly has no fashion sense.

Most often equipped with a sleek one-piece body suit complete with a white and blue color scheme, Quicksilver’s simple lightning bolt “logo” is usually emblazoned across his chest in a way that doesn’t exactly scream iconic. And while Pietro’s had a handful of other slightly different (yet ultimately similar) costumes in the past, it’s clear Cap isn’t being fooled by a prideful hero-turned-villain who apparently could care less about mimicking Captain America’s timeless duds.

So although Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson are able to deduce that Speed Demon, not Quicksilver, is the imposter streaking around the country in a Captain America suit, poking fun at Pietro’s pride and less than inspired choice in clothing is as funny as it is accurate. Captain America still has a long way to go to help the members of the Captain’s Network, but luckily, Quicksilver and his generic costume design won’t be involved.
