Marvel Comics is Putting Captain America Back On Ice

Steve Rogers is going back on ice in for a new storyline called "Out of Time," leading up to the landmark issue, Captain America #700.  Returning to a state of suspended animation will allow Captain America to wake up in a far distant future. The change is likely to be even more jarring than the moment when Cap awoke from a two-decade frozen slumber to find himself in 1964.

With the end of Secret Empire, the true Steve Rogers made his dramatic return and defeated the evil Captain America. Soon after, Sam Wilson returned the shield to Steve, effectively restoring the status quo for the beloved character. During the launch of Marvel Legacy, it was announced that Captain America would begin starring in his own title again, starting with Captain America #695, which will see Steve struggle to live in a world where the public has lost its trust in him. It's even come to a point where people don't even believe that he was ever frozen in ice.

Marvel has released the cover for Captain America #698, which shows Captain America trapped in a block of ice, a scene reminiscent to the events that played out in the iconic issue, Avengers #4. SVP and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort says that "everybody thought it couldn't happen again—but it has!" According to Brevoort, what will happen in Captain America #698 is the beginning of a whole new chapter for Steve Rogers:

Once more, Cap is a man out of time—but the new era he finds himself in is fraught with perils, personal hardships, and challenges unlike anything the shield-slinger has ever experienced before. The lead-up to our big blow-out #700 issue starts here!

It was also revealed that Captain America's new journey will feature the introduction of a new iteration of the Howling Commandos, which originated as a band of elite soldiers led by Nick Fury during World War II. Original Howling Commandos Gabe Jones, Dum Dum Dugan, and Fury helped provide Cap with a connection to his past when he awoke in 1964. It remains to be seen if one of the new Howling Commandos will also be a familiar face.

It will be interested to see how Cap responds to this strange future, or if Cap will get to interact with future versions of his fellow superheroes. Will Cap accept this as his fate or try to travel back in time to 2018? Fans will have to wait and see what this new chapter will bring for the Sentinel of Liberty.
