[WARNING: This post contains Mild SPOILERS for Captain America: Civil War.]
Following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America and Black Widow assemble a new team of heroes and that team is expected to appear again in Captain America: Civil War before returning in Avengers: Infinity War. Emily Van Camp will also return in Civil War as Agent 13/Sharon Carter, but that's not all.
Civil War's official cast list includes an almost absurd amount of Marvel characters; the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) among them. And let's not forget Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is in this movie, too! If Age of Ultron wasn't already enough of an indication that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is getting bigger and bigger, then Civil War's sprawling cast clinches it.
Filming is currently underway on Civil War and already we've had a good look at the on set action thanks to a steady influx of photos. The most significant development was seeing actor Frank Grillo's new costume as he's returning to the series as one of the villains, Crossbones. Otherwise, the leaked set images have mostly teased the arrival of Black Panther and his home country of Wakanda, as well as what could be a funeral for founding S.H.I.E.L.D. member, Peggy Carter.
Today, new photos from the Civil War set in Atlanta, GA feature Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow on the run from... something.
Whatever it is that Natasha is fleeing (or perhaps running toward?), she looks like she's recently taken part in a scuffle. She also isn't wearing her typical Black Widow suit but is instead dressed in civilian attire. This indicates she could be trying to keep a low profile. But if she's undercover, just who is she spying on? Since we're assuming these scenes are meant to take place in Africa, and presumably the nation of Wakanda, could she be tailing T'Challa (Chad Boseman) a.k.a. Black Panther?
A clue as to what Black Widow is up to may come from another batch of set photos, these ones featuring Elizabeth Olsen, the Scarlet Witch, also in her civvies.
Reportedly, Olsen and Johansson filmed a scene together where they chatted while seated at a cafe. This could imply that Black Widow and Scarlet Witch are both in Wakanda on a mission, which seems all the more likely since these set photos also include Chris Evans and Anthony Mackie on set as Cap and Falcon, respectively.
So, what has brought the new Avengers to Africa? Civil War is dealing with a global backlash to The Avengers in the aftermath of their fight with Ultron. Part of that struggle involved a public and very destructive battle between Iron Man and The Hulk, so there's a possibility the reason the new Avengers are in Africa could be tied to that event. Then again, perhaps they're in town to corral another out of control super-powered human in an attempt to quell the world's rising unease with enhanced people.
What clues can you gather from these set photos about why Cap and his new Avengers are in Africa? Do you believe it will tie in with Black Panther and Wakanda? Let us hear from you in the comments below!
