There's nothing quite like a hot cup of coffee in the morning. It warms you up, gives you energy for the day, and provides you with minor spoilers for upcoming movies. At least, that's the case with some coffee mugs for the upcoming Captain America: Civil War.

Some basics about the Civil War storyline can be gleaned from the comic books upon which it is based. Namely, that it will involve a superhuman registration act that splits the community in two, pitting those who uphold the new law against those who oppose it. At the center of the conflict in both the comics and the movie is Iron Man and Captain America, and other information about the members of both sides has been revealed through leaked concept art.

Now we have more evidence as to which side some of the heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will align themselves with. That clue comes in the form of some Civil War-themed coffee mugs with heat-activated art. CBM brings news of the mugs, along with some low-res images of their artwork. The artwork confirms that the heroes will be split into "Team Captain America" and "Team Iron Man," but it also shows the alignment of a few other heroes. Team Captain America features his old pal Winter Soldier as well as Falcon, Hawkeye, and Ant-Man. Team Iron Man includes Black Panther, Vision, and War Machine.

The artwork also splits the heroes up into Freedom (Cap's team) and Justice (Iron Man's team), which suggests that the movie will explore some of the same themes as the comic books. The comics dealt with the post-9/11 question of how much freedom should be given up in the name of safety and justice. That question was raised after a catastrophic event caused by a confrontation between the New Warriors and the villain Nitro resulted in over 600 deaths, some of whom were children. With the New Warriors not currently being part of the Marvel films, it is uncertain what exactly the catalyst will be in the movie.

While coffee mugs are not typically a cause for excitement among anyone not deeply addicted to caffeine, it is exciting to get a sneak peak of what's in store for Captain America: Civil War. It's a big event for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with implications for the movies yet to come. Captain America: Winter Soldier was one of the best Marvel movies so far, so expectations will be high that Marvel can once again deliver the goods.

There have been some complaints that superhero movies have become too formulaic, and maybe there is some validity to those complaints. However, there's little precedent for a superhero-on-superhero battle of this magnitude among past films. We're sure to see more Civil War-themed merchandise in the months to come as Marvel whips up excitement for this massive clash of freedom vs. justice.

Captain America: Civil War will release on May 6, 2016
