After wrapping up his stint as Captain America last year, Chis Evans admits that he already misses it. The actor debuted as Steve Rogers in the MCU in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and became a staple in the franchise alongside other Phase 1 actors such as Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and Mark Ruffalo. As Marvel Studios wrapped up the Infinity Saga, the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed Avengers: Endgame served as the swan song for some of those founding heroes, including the Super Soldier.

It's no secret that Evans didn't originally want the role, turning it down multiple times despite Marvel Studios making it clear that they only want him. He didn't want to sign a multi-picture deal, especially after his experience with Fox/Marvel's Fantastic Four films. Some pep talk from his mother and Downey ultimately convinced him to take the opportunity, with Evans revealing that all his fears never materialized he loved playing the part right away. Now that he's officially retired as the Captain America, passing the mantle to Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson at the end of Endgame, the actor candidly reveals that he's already starting to miss it.

Speaking with Backstage about his career and passion for acting, Evans, of course, talked about his time playing Captain America in the MCU. As ever, he re-emphasized how much he loved his nine-year working experience with Marvel Studios, adding he's already missing the role. That said, he's also excited where his career is headed next.

“I absolutely loved my time with Marvel; I already miss it. but there’s no denying that it is very exciting to just have complete freedom to pursue whatever my creative appetite wants.”

Chris Evans as Ransom Drysdale in Knives Out

Evans missing his time in the MCU makes sense - after all, he was part of that franchise for almost a decade. He worked with a lot of the same people, with the original Avengers actors developing a genuine friendship. However, the actor also knows that to be able to grow, he needs to get out of his comfort zone and start pursuing something new, and years of playing Captain America has made the role his comfort zone. Like Downey, Evans has become synonymous with the noble hero. Since passing the iconic shield, Evans has starred in Rian Johnson's acclaimed whodunit, Knives Out and Apple TV+'s Defending Jacob - both projects offered him very different roles to play compared to Captain America. Right now, fans are still waiting what the future lies ahead for the actor, with the coronavirus forcing Hollywood to stop not helping.

While everyone would love to see Evans back as Captain America in the MCU, even briefly, it's best that Marvel Studios moves forward with their plans to establish Mackie's version of the hero. Following the footsteps of Evans is already going to be an uphill climb considering how loved he is in the role, but continuously reminiscing on what's done will only hamper their intentions to move forward to Phase 4. That doesn't mean that Evans should never come back as the Star-Spangled Avenger, but it should be done farther down the road.
