New stunning fan-art thanks and bids Chris Evans goodbye after seven years of playing Steve Rogers aka. Captain America on the big screen in light of his recent message celebrating his last day filming Avengers 4. Yesterday, the actor took to his social media accounts to announce that he has now wrapped shooting for next year's still-untitled Avengers movie. Based on the emotional and nostalgic tone of his post, many fans were quick to assume this means Avengers 4 will serve as his final on-screen appearance as the super soldier.

It's no secret that Evans turned down the Captain America role a couple of times before Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark aka. Iron Man) personally reached out to him. He eventually boarded the MCU, debuting in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger directed by Joe Johnston. However, it wasn't until Joe and Anthony Russo's The Winter Soldier and Civil War that fans really started to respond to the MCU version of Cap. With the original Avengers tipped to reunite in Avengers 4 as they go up against the most powerful enemy they've ever faced, fans are hoping that if Steve really does bite the bullet in the film, it will be a fitting send-off to the character.

Courtesy of digital artist SG Posters comes a tribute to Evans for his years of service bringing to life one of the most beloved heroes in the MCU. The image, which references both the actor and the character he's played on the big screen, has left fans feeling quite emotional over the thought that the actor may really leave the franchise for good after next year's Avengers 4. It's important to note, however, that Evans' recent comments aren't a confirmation that Steve will die in Avengers 4. It's certainly possible the movie will find a way to "retire" the character, yet leave the door open for his (potential) return to the MCU in the future. Given the popular fan theory that Avengers 4 will include time-travel in some way, that could pave the way to Steve Rogers opting to stay in the past, thus allowing him to reunite with a still-living Peggy Carter. This way, should there be any need for him in the future, Steve can be brought back to the MCU's present. Either way, chances are good that Avengers 4 will retire Cap and the other Phase 1 superheroes in some way, in turn setting the stage for second-generation heroes like Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Spider-Man and Captain Marvel to lead the MCU from hereon forward.

In conjunction with the idea that Steve will no longer be Captain America, fans have been actively discussing who will pick up the shield in the MCU next. Over the years, there have been several characters in the Marvel comics who assumed the title, but in the context of the MCU, there are two clear options: Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie). While both have carried the shield in print, the latter seems to have a better chance of assuming the persona considering that Bucky only just became the White Wolf in the MCU. Otherwise, with a stacked roster of heroes at their disposal, Marvel Studios may be better off not having anyone take over the Cap mantle for a while.
