Bucky May Never Become Captain America According to Sebastian Stan

Sebastian Stan says he hasn't had any conversations with Marvel Studios regarding the possibility of Bucky Barnes becoming the new Captain America.

Sebastian Stan talks about the possibility of his Marvel character, Bucky Barnes, eventually assuming the persona of Captain America. The actor has been asked several times about this possibility, and more often than not, he gives his own personal insight on the matter. But with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) widely believed to be saying goodbye to the MCU in Avengers 4, the interest with regard to who becomes the brand new Captain America has only intensified, hence, questions about who will take over his mantle have become a more frequent topic of conversation.

Over the last couple of years, Bucky's life has been a roller coaster ride. After discovering that he was brainwashed by HYDRA, he decided to live quietly in Wakanda while he tried to regain the parts of him that was lost while he was the Winter Soldier. Now, he goes by White Wolf and is, once again, one of the good guys. He was part of the half of the universe that disintegrated after Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War, but it's believed he'll be one of the heroes who will be brought back to life one way or another in Avengers 4.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote his new film Destroyer with Nicole Kidman, the actor was asked about his Marvel career, including whether or not he has been approached by anyone regarding the possibility that Bucky will become Captain America like in the comics. Obviously being careful with his words, the actor explained that while the topic has come up before, there was never an official discussion about it. "No. Not really, no. It's usually like you know, it's like the dream you know, just sort of people might mention something, but we never go that way," he said.

Stan was also asked about the reported in-development limited series over at Disney+ centering on a brand new adventure for Bucky and Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson aka Falcon. Surprisingly, while the actor gave a serious answer with regard to him potentially taking over the iconic shield, he gave a more playful reply when it comes to the TV show, opting to jokingly say that the project could be titled "Miami Vice," and if that's the case, he'd gladly do it. So far, only Tom Hiddleston's Loki-focused series has been officially announced by Disney, but despite this, the Bucky/Falcon show was rumored to have already landed Empire writer Malcolm Spellman to pen the story - indicating it's only a matter of time before it's confirmed by Marvel.

At this point, perhaps it's best for Marvel Studios to not rush finding a replacement for Steve Rogers as Captain America in case he bites the bullet or takes the backseat after the events of Avengers 4. Much like the other founding MCU actors, Evans has become synonymous with the role and is loved by countless fans all over the world. With Bucky getting a brand new persona as the White Wolf and Sam (who also becomes Captain America in the comics), there's really no need to get a brand new Star-Spangled Avenger as the two can go on with their adventures retaining their current superhero alter-egos.
