Warning! Spoilers for Timeless #1 by Marvel Comics

In a shocking new tease for the future of Marvel Comics storylines, a new image suggests Bucky Barnes will kill Captain America in a bloody fashion. In Timeless #1, Kang the Conqueror looks across the current timeline and sees events that are yet to occur - which includes a look at the Winter Soldier (or someone masquerading as him) standing over a bloodied Captain America.

Captain America has died a few times in the comics, most notably in The Death of Captain America by Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting. Spinning out of the events of Civil War, a brainwashed Sharon Carter assassinated Steve Rogers, who was under the control of Doctor Faustus. Captain America's death had a lasting impact in the comics, including leading Bucky Barnes (the Winter Soldier) to become the new Captain America. While Bucky has long been an ally and confidant to Rogers since his own brainwashing ended, it seems the hero might be responsible for the new death of Captain America in the comics.

In Timeless #1 by Jed MacKay, Kev Walker, Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Mark Bagley, Andrew Hennessy, Marte Gracia, and VC's Ariana Maher, Kang the Conqueror takes a look across the main Marvel timeline. The comic hints at future Marvel Comics storylines, including teasing a new Young Avengers team, providing a new look at the Mjolnir-wielding Thanos from Thor's dark visions, and seeing the moon destroyed in a great reckoning. However, the most shocking tease is seeing a person dressed as the Winter Soldier (presumably Bucky) standing above Captain America, who he's just shot.

Winter Soldier Captain America

It's important to note that Kang the Conqueror mentions something is causing a "chronal distortion" that means his gaze into the future is somewhat warped. As a result, the time-traveling villain reveals some of the things he sees "should not happen" while others are moving in "different directions" than he originally anticipated. So, it's possible the new death of Captain America could be a result of a changed timeline. Still, considering how all the other teases mostly fall in line with future Marvel Comics storylines, it would be surprising the moment never came to be.

The question remains: Will this future come to pass? And if it does, is it actually the Earth-616 version of Bucky Barnes and Captain America Kang sees? Marvel has introduced shocking moments which have later been revealed to occur in different universes, so that may be the case here. Time will tell if Bucky Barnes is responsible for the new death of Captain America. Timeless #1 is in comic book stores now.
