Captain America's unique Avengers: Age of Ultron vision highlights just how different he is from the rest of the team. Wanda Maximoff immediately made an impact in the Marvel Cinematic Universe the moment she met the Avengers. Using her mind-controlling abilities, she hypnotized the heroes and amplified their deepest fears. Iron Man was haunted by the idea of not doing enough to save the universe from the then-unknown threat, while Black Widow was tormented by her Red Room experience. Everyone's visions appeared as nightmares, except for Steve Rogers, who seemed like he had a daydream.

This seemed like the perfect place for him to be, so it didn't make sense that it was supposed to be his deepest fear, especially since Iron Man's nightmare featured the Avengers dead. However, this actually reinforced the idea that Steve Rogers was a man out of time. While he had been doing everything to settle in the modern era, he still felt like an outsider. The reason why it haunted him was that he knew he would never be able to live the life he lost.

At this point, Steve still didn't know that traveling back in time is possible. In fact, even Tony wasn't convinced that it could be done until five years after Thanos' snap and Ant-Man shared his experience of being stuck in the Quantum Realm. So, Captain Rogers didn't really have any choice but to accept his reality and make peace with the life that he never got to live. His Avengers: Age of Ultron vision was a stark reminder of everything that could have been in his life had Captain America not been frozen in ice.

Steve may have not known it during Avengers: Age of Ultron, but because of the threat brought by Thanos, the Avengers eventually found a way to make time travel possible in Avengers: Endgame. Not only did it allow the Decimation to be undone, but it also offered Captain America the chance to return to his rightful time and place. After years of feeling out of place, he finally got the chance to live the life he always wanted to live. Knowing that Steve always yearned to return to his own time despite seemingly fitting in the modern times makes his and Peggy's happy ending much sweeter.
