If Captain America (Chris Evans) is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he shouldn't be alone - Agent Carter (Hayley Atwell) should come with him. Chris Evans is reportedly in talks to come back to the MCU for possibly two projects. Whether it'll be a cameo in an upcoming MCU movie or appearing in one of the many Disney+ Marvel shows on the way, Captain America will be a sight for sore eyes, but Steve Rogers alongside his love, Peggy Carter, would be even better.

Steve Rogers, Peggy Carter, and their time-tossed romance were introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger, but by the end of the film, they were tragically torn apart when he was frozen under the ocean for almost 70 years. After Rogers re-emerged, he reunited with an elderly Peggy in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and he buried her in Captain America: Civil War. For Peggy's part, she struggled to put Steve behind her after World War II and move on. Marvel's Agent Carter ran for two seasons on ABC and showed Peggy still saving democracy as part of SHIELD's forerunner, the Strategic Scientific Reserve, before Agent Carter helped found SHIELD. However, Avengers: Endgame's time travel established that Steve saw Peggy in SHIELD's Camp Lehigh base, and, after he returned the Infinity Stones following Thanos' (Josh Brolin) defeat, Rogers chose to return to the past and live his life with Peggy.

Steve and Peggy are arguably the MCU's greatest love story but fans have only fleetingly seen them together. The only time they shared substantial screen time together was in Captain America: The First Avenger back in 2011 so it's been an entire decade since they've had more than one touching scene per film. But Steve has always dreamed about Peggy, and this includes the vision Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) showed him in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which foretold the long-awaited dance that they finally shared at the end of Avengers: Endgame. With Peggy and Steve, it was never will-they/won't-they because fans know they are, in fact, each others' endgame. Steve and Peggy (and Evans and Atwell) clearly have chemistry but, for fans, the real tragedy is that we never really get to see Steve and Peggy beyond a handful of moments, albeit heartwarming ones.

Unless Captain America's return involves Old Steve Rogers after the events of Avengers: Endgame, by which time Peggy is dead, his comeback will very likely involve more time travel or perhaps even the Multiverse. The MCU has several means of accomplishing this, from utilizing the Quantum Realm once again to an alternate version of Captain America pulled via Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Regardless, to pluck Rogers from the past at this point would mean taking him from his happy life with Peggy - but this would beg the question of why Agent Carter wouldn't just come with him on a new adventure?

After all, Peggy Carter is an extremely capable and intelligent field agent and she is an action heroine in her own right. Peggy held her own alongside Captain America fighting against Hydra in The First Avenger, and in Agent Carter, she literally fought to defend a vial of Steve's blood, which contained the last remnants of the Super Soldier Serum that made him Captain America. Peggy has also saved both New York City and Los Angeles in Agent Carter; she would not want to be left behind if Steve received another call to action.

As part of the Avengers and in The Winter Soldier and Civil War, Captain America has fought alongside Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and even Peggy's niece Sharon (Emily Van Camp), but it's time Steve and Peggy embarked on a new adventure together. Captain America and Agent Carter fighting side by side once again - just like how they took on Hydra with the Howling Commandos in World War II - is something fans are dying to see, especially now that they are both even more experienced as heroes and they're officially a couple. Whatever happens in the potential next chapter of Captain America's heroic life, Agent Carter needs to be at his side. Knowing Peggy, she would never want to be left behind, and Steve Rogers would agree.
