Chris Evans has thrown his full support behind Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson following a report failing to name the character as Captain America while announcing the director for the upcoming solo film Captain America 4. Evans played Steve Rogers aka Captain America from 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger until 2019's Avengers: Endgame where, at the end of the film, he handed the shield over to his friend and ally Sam Wilson. This was in keeping with the comics, as in 2014 Sam Wilson became the new Captain America.

The MCU explored Sam Wilson's journey to becoming Captain America with the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier which premiered in March 2021 and concluded in April the same year. The day after the final episode aired it was confirmed that Marvel Studios was developing Captain America 4 with Sam Wilson in the lead role. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier head writer Malcolm Spellman will pen the script and it was recently announced that Julius Onah would direct Captain America 4.

When the announcement about Onah signing on to direct was made, THR said that it was unclear if Evans would reprise his role and that it was unclear who would wield the shield despite The Falcon and the Winter Soldier clearly laying out that Sam Wilson was the new Captain America. Evans, took to Twitter to throw in his support behind Mackie. Evans simply responded that "Sam Wilson Is Captain America". See the tweet below:

Despite Captain America's story getting a proper conclusion at the end of Avengers: Endgame, there have been persistent rumors that Marvel Studios was in contact to have Evans reprise his role as Steve Rogers. Unlike Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff who died in that film, Steve Rogers was last seen alive and his whereabouts became a fun running joke over the course of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. It appears though that Evans has moved on from the role, lining up various other film projects and Marvel Studios is fully committed to continuing the franchise by passing it on to Mackie as Sam Wilson.

Evans recently has faced a similar situation as Mackie's Sam Wilson with the recent release of Lightyear. Evans voiced the title space ranger that was made famous by Tim Allen in the Toy Story films. Despite the filmmakers making it clear why they went with a different voice actor for Buzz Lightyear as a creative choice to show this was supposed to be the movie that inspired the toyline, it still was a controversial decision. Many audience members and even a few celebrities including both Tom Hanks and Allen himself have weighed in on the decision. Evans knows what it is like to face such resistance to stepping into an iconic role and is showing full support for his successor ahead of Captain America 4.
