Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has a release date in mind for Captain America 4. With Chris Evans now retired from the role that was integral to the foundation of the MCU, a new Cap stepped into the spotlight earlier this year. After passing down the shield to Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the former Falcon wrestled with the idea of taking on the mantle that Steve Rogers originated in Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Alongside Steve's best friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Sam took down the Flag Smashers and fought against John Walker's US Agent before finally donning the shield in the season finale.

Recently, it was reported that Mackie had finally signed on for Captain America 4, solidifying a deal that seemed to be all but a guarantee. Right now, it's unclear whether or not any characters from Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be joining Sam Wilson in the upcoming film. Although Marvel has their MCU slate dated through early 2023, Captain America 4 currently doesn't have a confirmed release date. That doesn't mean there isn't one, though.

In an interview with Collider, Feige revealed that he may know the release date for Captain America 4. While the producer notes that release dates are constantly shifting and changing, especially in recent months, Marvel plans their releases years in advance. He has one in particular in mind for Mackie's return as Captain America, but naturally, he didn't reveal what it was. Check out what he had to say below:

Yes, we always work towards release dates, that doesn't mean they don't shift and change, certainly as we've seen lately, but we have something specific in mind.

With Marvel's Phase 4 in full swing, the studio is already looking to the future and while it's unclear whether or not Captain America 4 is part of that slate or if it will be seen in Phase 5, it's safe to say it may be awhile before audiences get to see Sam Wilson's return. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier encapsulated a theme that will be seen throughout Phase 4, with the MCU's old guard passing down the mantle to their newer counterparts. Black Widow saw Yelena Belova primed to take on the role originated by Scarlett Johansson's Natasha Romanoff and later this year Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop is widely presumed to be taking over as Hawkeye in the Disney+ series of the same name.

While appearances from Sam Wilson shouldn't be counted out, Mackie may be making small cameos in other MCU projects for a while before he takes center stage again. As the de facto leader of the Avengers, Captain America may be too busy putting together a team to take on his own mission for quite some time. When he does, though, it's sure to be an exciting affair and more than a few familiar faces will likely return in Captain America 4.
