Director Julius Onah shares details about Captain America 4, which is currently in pre-production and will start filming in early 2023. Since the Infinity Saga concluded, Marvel Studios have been busy fleshing out the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, with both new superheroes from the comics and progressing some older characters. As Steve Rogers' story ended in Avengers: Endgame, the mantle — or more specifically, shield — was passed on to Sam Wilson, setting him up to carry the Captain America title. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier focused on Sam coming to terms with continuing Steve's legacy, which came to fruition in the season 1 finale when he finally came out to the world as the new Captain America.

While The Falcon and The Winter Soldier may not be back for season 2, Sam's path as Captain America has barely begun. As Phase 4 is coming to an end, 2023 will launch Phase 5 as part of Marvel Studios' Multiverse Saga, which will include Captain America: New World Order. Written by The Falcon and The Winter Soldier's Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, the exact plot for Captain America: New World Order has yet to be revealed by Marvel Studios. Aside from Anthony Mackie's character, the Phase 5 installment will see the returns of Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, who will take on the Falcon mantle, and The Incredible Hulk's Tim Blake Nelson is returning as The Leader. With new updates shared at the D23 Expo, audiences are getting another exciting update for Captain America: New World Order.

During an interview with Collider at the D23 Expo, director Onah spoke about the Captain America sequel, which is currently in pre-production. While there are still many parts left that need to be completed, Onah confirmed that they "begin shooting at the top of next year" and expressed his excitement at the progress made. See what Onah said below:

"We’re already quite busy, putting everything together. As you know with these films, there are so many elements, between the cast and the script and the effects and the stunts. It’s really exciting to be really diving deep into it."

Sam Wilson as Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Despite the lack of clear plot details from the director, the Captain America: New World Order title may already be a clue about what Sam will deal with in the movie. In the comics, Red Skull created the New World Order organization in an attempt to take over the world. The New World Order debuted in Incredible Hulk No. 403 in March 1993 and included such members as Absorbing Man, Silvermane, Juggernaut, and more. Whether it means a return for Red Skull remains to be seen, but with The Leader set to return as the film's main villain, the door does seem open for the MCU's New World Order to be headed by the Incredible Hulk antagonist.

Assuming Captain America: New World Order starts filming in January or February 2023, it won't be long until some details begin to come out. As much as Marvel Studios attempt to keep everything under lock and key, set photos are always taken and shared online, giving fans a better idea of what the projects have in store for them. It's also very likely there will be more news about Captain America: New World Order's cast, aside from the five characters that have been confirmed already. Since this will be a huge chapter for Sam in the MCU, it will be exciting to see what they are doing in Captain America: New World Order once they enter principal photography next year.
