If you've seen Avengers: Age of Ultron and are having difficulty waiting until 2018 before Earth's Mightiest reunite on screen, don't fret. Captain America, Iron Man and many of the other Avengers characters are assembling as we speak in Atlanta as production begins on Captain America: Civil War.
Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) may be the titular protagonist, but Civil War is shaping up to be Marvel's biggest ensemble yet with a cast that's still growing. Martin Freeman joined the team yesterday in an unspecified role and very soon, we'll find out what young actor will be play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the film as well.
In the meantime, we're getting a few glimpses at the two iconic figureheads that will be pitted against one another, just as they were in the Civil War Marvel Comics crossover event - Captain America vs. Iron Man. El Mayimbe has released promotional images from the film on Instagram this week, first teasing the two facing off and then showcasing the latest iteration of Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) armor. We can only hope we get some art of Black Panther and Spider-Man next!
Here's the image by itself and yes, it's extremely familiar and you'll be forgiven for thinking it's the same costume from Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Let's take a closer look. Below are two renderings, conceptual/promotional art for the Captain America costumes of Avengers 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Comparing the two, the Civil War seemingly drops some of the red (and the white on the arms) for more of the navy blue and there's a different pattern to the armored plates on the chest - note the lines stemming from the star. For reference, here's the Winter Soldier "stealth outfit" which is Evans' favorite to date, and features no red:
Overall, the changes to the costume between the events of Age of Ultron to Civil War are minor - at first glance - and we're guessing the redesign began with making the costume more breathable and flexible for Evans who told us on set that his newer Avengers getup wasn't as comfortable to wear compared the stealth suit. From there, subtle changes were made to focus on the blue. Our guess, part of it may be to make the outfit ever so slightly more contrasting to Iron Man's red armor from the front.
Comparing to the previous promo art (below) released by El Mayimbe for Civil War however, there appears to be noticeably more red on the sides of Cap's costume which isn't visible in the image up top.
Following the events of Age of Ultron, the collective governments of the world pass an act designed to regulate all superhuman activity. This polarizes opinion amongst the Avengers, causing two factions to side with Iron Man or Captain America, which causes an epic battle between former allies. Civil War is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron is now in theaters, followed by Ant-Man on July 17 2015, Captain America: Civil War on May 6 2016, Doctor Strange on November 4 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5 2017, Spider-Man on July 28, 2017, Thor: Ragnarok on November 3 2017, Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1 on May 4 2018, Black Panther on July 6 2018, Captain Marvel on November 2 2018, Avengers: Infinity War - Part 2 on May 3 2019 and Inhumans on July 12, 2019.
