Once Guy Ritchie finishes directing duties on Sherlock Holmes 2 he might be buckling up to helm a remake of the 1981 Burt Reynolds racing comedy, Cannonball Run. Who would Richie cast instead of the moustachioed legend?
George Clooney of course.
The original film was based on an actual cross country race, the “Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash.” The comedy, which had an all-star cast including Reynolds, Dom DeLuise (as Burt’s Sidekick), Roger Moore, Jackie Chan, Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr. was a massive hit on its release, grossing $72 million. It followed a group of ragtag outlaws as they raced their way across the United States.
Badass Digest is reporting this news a rumor, so it’s all very speculative. Even Devin Faraci says that he “heard from an agency source that this was happening” but then he “checked with a source close to the Guy Ritchie camp and was told this was the first they heard of it.” We even joked about such a remake a couple of years ago, but it does seem like the type of film that could be working its way around the development bowls of a Hollywood studio.
If the story is true, the Clooney casting reeks of laziness. Yes, he has the charm and the box office clout (along with the A-list friends) to headline such a picture, but it seems too close to the Ocean’s franchise for comfort, right down to the Rat Pack connections. A more interesting casting choice would be Matthew McConaughey (Does anybody else remember his Burt Reynolds fixation in Edtv?). He’s got Reynolds’ laconic charm, and he could use a potential franchise (the original Cannonball had two lesser sequels) that plays to his strengths. Clooney also has a pretty packed slate, with a 21st Century redo of The Man From U.N.C.L.E in the pipeline, so this could be a remake too far for the star who likes to mix art with commerce.
Pierce Brosnan (or heck, even Daniel Craig) would make a good replacement for Roger Moore. In the original, Moore riffed on his persona and played… er… Roger Moore, a man with an obsession with James Bond and the actor Roger Moore. While, Jackie Chan would make an obvious choice for the Jackie Chan role, he is a bigger star now than he was back in the early 80s!
Again, this is all rumor. Cannonball Run does have a certain “brand recognition” and it has the potential to be a joke-filled action fest with a lot of A-list stars picking up easy paychecks. Think Valentine’s Day or New Year’s Eve with wheels, for the boys.
Guy Ritchie is also an odd choice for directing the film. Cannonball Run doesn’t exactly fit his oeuvre, but that could also be said of Sherlock Holmes and the Madonna “comedy” Swept Away, so you never can tell. Ritchie’s camp are denying knowledge of this, so maybe he’s just a name on a list of potential directors, and Clooney could just be the “dream star”.
If a remake of Cannonball Run does float your boat don’t get too excited. It would appear that this could just be a good old fashioned rumor, or maybe just the early rumblings of development, so at the very least it’s not going to be playing in a theatre near you for another couple of years.
