The final trailer for upcoming horror film, Candyman, unlocks when fans visit a brand new website and say the name Candyman five times. Director Nia DaCosta and Oscar-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele have collaborated on the film, which is technically billed as a “spiritual sequel” to the original 1992 hit. Much has apparently changed with regard to this new take on the familiar concept, but the classic summoning of Candyman remains the same.

When audiences were first introduced to Candyman, a big part of its intrigue was how the killer’s victims willingly invited the notorious urban legend into their lives. By repeating the name Candyman five times into a mirror, the spirit of the 19th century man returns to the realm of the living and murders whoever summoned him. The first film in the franchise did well with this concept, but unfortunately, both of the subsequent sequels – Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh in 1995 and Candyman: Day of the Dead couldn’t revive the scary thrills of the original film. Now, nearly 30 years after the first film arrived in theaters, DaCosta is set to bring her own modernized take on the legend of the Candyman.

With Candyman’s official release now just a matter of days away, the final bit of promotional material has arrived. As Bloody Disgusting reports, the latest (and final) Candyman trailer may not offer anything new in terms of footage from the film, but it does arrive via a new website which is activated by saying "Candyman" five times into your computer’s microphone. Fans who visit the site (Idareyou.CandymanMovie.com) will first encounter a black screen – that is, until the challenge is taken up to repeatedly say the killer’s name. It’s a fun and creepy way to get audiences just a little more into Candyman before its arrival.

Candyman 2020 Girls At Bathroom Mirror

The original Candyman dealt specifically with the story of an interracial relationship in the 19th century, which ultimately lead to the death of the man who became known as Candyman. In DaCosta and Peele’s version, however, the story is updated to mirror current societal realities such as police brutality and gentrification, while focusing on a Black cast of characters. In this way, the franchise is very much treading new ground in terms of not using the horror genre to exploit suffering in the Black community. Everything that’s been seen and said of Candyman in recent months indicates a smartly crafted horror-thriller. Past praise from one of the film’s stars, Colman Domingo, even pointed out that no trauma experienced by the characters is seen onscreen.

As for this latest bit of Candyman promotion, it’s strange that this has just now been offered to the public - a mere matter of days away from the film’s release. The film’s release date was bumped during the worst parts of the Covid-19 pandemic, and perhaps this ultimately effected the launch of the new Candyman website. However, initial intrigue over the film would have arguably been better capitalized on if people could have visited a site where saying "Candyman" five times would have delivered the film’s first trailer.
