The Jordan Peele produced Candyman reboot, from director Nia DaCosta, is one of horror fans' most highly-anticipated horror movies of 2020, but so far, there's no sign of a trailer release.

Building off a legacy that began in 1992 from director Bernard Rose, the story of Candyman - whose real name is Daniel Robitaille - enchanted audiences with gothic horror tropes and dark romantic fantasy that stemmed from a story by Clive Barker (Hellraiser). The 1992 film starred Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen as Helen Lyle, who has recently been confirmed to be returning to the film in some capacity. Though Madsen may not make an appearance, as the actress playing Lyle is Cassie Kramer, fans of the original film have been thrilled with news that Todd will be lending his talents to the new film, though whether he'll be the titular character is still unknown.

Candyman spawned two sequels, and the new 2020 movie has been described as a "spiritual sequel", though not much else has been revealed about the major plot, other than it will return to Cabrini-Green, now-gentrified in Chicago, as a throwback to the film's original and haunting setting. DaCosta and Peele - who co-wrote the script with Win Rosenfeld - have been tight-lipped about Candyman's secrets, which might mean a trailer release is still off in the distance.

When Could Candyman 2020's Trailer Release?

It's common for horror movie trailers to release with others in theaters. Given that 2020 has some incredible movies on the way, even early in the year, there is ample opportunity for Candyman to launch its trailer. Recent news from Bloody Disgusting points to a chance that Candyman could release a trailer to coincide with The Invisible Man, which releases February 28th. Right now, this seems to be the most likely possibility, but there are alternatives.

Most films seem to be on the two or three month before release mark for trailers in recent trends, with A Quiet Place 2's first trailer having dropped on January 1, 2020. However, this isn't completely solid, as Spiral: From The Book of Saw released its first trailer in February, three months prior to release. If there's a two month lead for promotion, another choice might be Antlers, which is produced by Guillermo del Toro, a legendary horror director with whom Peele went toe-to-toe with for Oscars glory with Get Out and The Shape of Water in the 2018 awards season. Antlers has been given an R rating, and its April 17th release date seems like a better fit for Candyman's trailer, as it's nearly two months prior.

Of course, if Peele and DaCosta are really wanting to keep their secrets until the last possible moment, a final option would be to release with the new Saw movie, as Spiral hits theaters on May 15th, barely a month before Candyman 2020 will release. While it certainly would mean a much longer wait for fans, with trailers' tendency to release too many key details, as was seen with the final trailer for Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man, perhaps waiting is better than being spoiled too soon.
