Even 27 years after creator Bill Watterson ended his comic strip, Calvin and Hobbes remains widely popular with millions of fans. Despite the strip running for only 10 years, its impact on pop culture is still potent. While much of the love comes from the heartwarming nature of both Calvin and Hobbes, some readers like how weird the strips can be.

Weirdness is a prevalent part of Calvin and Hobbes. Both Calvin and Hobbes seek it out in their adventures, and Calvin's precocious daydreams lead him to picture himself in more than a handful of bizarre situations. Likewise, Watterson's strange imagination took his often breathtaking artwork to unexpected places, especially in the Sunday strips.

Vampire Sorority Babes

Calvin and Hobbes February 27 1986

Early in the strip's run, readers seedrr that Calvin wants to watch movies that are way too mature for him, leading to some attempts to watch these movies. But this strip shows off one of his earliest and weirdest plans.

When Calvin and Hobbes decide to go see Vampire Sorority Babes, a film obviously not meant for kids, Calvin comes up with a plan, which plays out in the last panel: to disguise themselves as an 18-year-old by standing on each other's shoulders. It's hard to figure out whether Calvin or Hobbes is on top in Calvin's mind, but the result is still weirdly hilarious as Calvin tries to convince the clearly unamused ticket woman that the person with a stuffed tiger head in front of her is really legit.

Clothes Army

Calvin and Hobbes November 22 1987

Having inanimate objects attack Calvin is a funny running gag throughout the comic's run. This particular incident, however, does not involve things trying to eat Calvin. In this strip, while getting dressed for school, Calvin is attacked by an army of clothes, which attach themselves to him and make him look ridiculous.

The weirdness from this one stems from how silly this situation is, especially since the clothes were too much for Calvin to overcome. However, it's not enough to not let out a snort of laughter at seeing just how crazy Calvin looks, as well as his reaction when his mom questions him about it.

Jumping Out Of His Skin

Calvin and Hobbes February 25 1989

Calvin and Hobbes is no stranger for dark imagery that leads into some of the bleakest comics available. And while this strip isn't really all that bleak, it's certainly weird. Taking a play on of the phrase "jumping out of your skin," Calvin decides to do just that: jump out of his skin.

Upon doing so, he decides to go find his mom to try to scare her enough so that she jumps out of her skin. It's a very weird image to see for sure, especially seeing Calvin as a skeleton walking away from what's left of his skin. It's also weird to imagine what Mom's reaction is going to be, considering that she no doubt would just see Calvin in his regular form rather than the skeletal one he's pictured as.

Song Sparrow

Calvin and Hobbes June 18 1989

Sometimes Calvin and Hobbes strips feature nearly entirely Calvin's imagination, leading to extremely weird strips where he sees himself as various animals or monsters. This strip is certainly one of the weirdest of those strips. In this one, Calvin sees himself as a song sparrow, and he breaks into song without warning.

This, of course, leads to him being kicked out of the house. The outcome was pretty obvious, but the strip itself is certainly weird. Calvin very rarely sees himself has birds, especially weak ones like a sparrow. Still, it's an odd one that many fans may not even remember.

Snowman House Of Horror

Calvin and Hobbes December 28 1989

Calvin's snowmen are a hilarious running gag throughout the strip's run. Many times they have been extremely weird, from giant aliens to Deranged Mutant Killer Monster Snow Goons. This strip, however, takes that weirdness to a whole new level.

Instead of just one weird snowman situation, readers are presented with Calvin's "Snowman House of Horror," in which he has subjected multiple snowmen to horrendous punishments. Calvin is no stranger to making his snowmen be put through painful, destructive methods, but there's usually only one of those in a comic. The fact that this one puts five of them through terrible punishments really ups to weirdness of the whole situation immensely.

Neo-Cubist

Calvin and Hobbes June 17 1990

Some of the funniest Calvin and Hobbes strips can be ones where the art style changes severely, such as this 1990 strip drawn in a neo cubist style. After an argument with his dad that clearly didn't go Calvin's way, he begins to see "both sides of everything."

There aren't many strips in which change to the art style is this drastic, so seeing ones like this where everything is different can be weird. But Calvin's imagination is certainly a weird one, and the way that he decides to see things like this is a fun and creative way that fits into Calvin's personality and his past interactions with his dad.

Stomach Microbes

Calvin and Hobbes February 7 1993-1

Calvin is a fan of all things gross and disgusting, except when it comes to eating the mysterious green slop that seems to be for dinner often at his house. This has led to weird strips like this one.

In this strip, Calvin's "stomach microbes" try to process the disgusting food he has for dinner only for it to explode, explaining why Calvin burps. It's certainly an odd one that may even be revolting to look at given the content material. But then again, this gives readers the chance to experience just how bad the green sludge that's constantly on the menu really is.

Singing Dinner

Calvin and Hobbes March 6 1994

Everyone likes a good meal and a song, but seeing a dinner suddenly come to life and spout out Shakespeare is not exactly what anyone has in mind — except Calvin, it seems.

During one of these awful meals, Calvin's green slop suddenly springs to life, reciting Shakespeare before breaking into song, convincing Calvin to eat the meal quickly just to make it stop. Readers have seen Calvin try various ways to avoid eating this meal, but this is one of the few times he actually is convinced to eat it. But the imagined factor that makes him eat the mush whole is beyond weird. Hilarious, sure, but still incredibly weird.

Puppet Mom

Calvin and Hobbes February 5 1995

There have been some pretty funny Calvin and Hobbes strips about parenting, and while this strip doesn't quite give parenting advice, it certainly shows Calvin's Mom in a weird light. In a dream, Calvin finds a new door in his house, only for a puppet version of his mom appear, making him realize he's been captured by aliens and being subjected to experiments.

Calvin had been captured by aliens before, but readers have never seen anything like this. It's not only weird but also a little creepy to see Mom as a sock puppet worn by an evil alien. Luckily, it was only a dream.

Deer Hunters

Calvin and Hobbes February 26 1995

Calvin and Hobbes has no trouble making statements about things like the environment and the state of the world in its run, but this strip takes that concept and makes the delivery really, really weird. In a statement about overpopulation, Calvin creates a story for class that shows off deer hunting humans.

The frustrated looks of his parents in the final panel are enough to show off just how frustrated and weird this entire strip is. Sure, Calvin and Hobbes has had some violence in it, mostly involving Calvin in his various personas, but seeing violence like this, where an actual human is shot, certainly seems out of place in a strip so beloved by everyone.
