The antics of the titular characters in Bill Watterson's legendary comic strip Calvin and Hobbes usually get them, or at least Calvin, into trouble, most notably with Calvin's mom. Mom is usually patient, doesn't she put up with Calvin's craziness and troublemaking for long, which often leads to her disciplining her son harshly.

Even so, her reactions are usually tame and only frustrated. However, there are several times in which Calvin's idea of fun sends her over the edge, leading to serious yelling and visuals that perfectly display how mad she is.

Stupid Chromosome

Calvin and Hobbes December 29 1985

Often when it comes to Mom's freakouts, the person she freaks out against is Calvin, the instigator of much of her frustrations. But sometimes, she takes her anger out on Dad.

In this comic, Calvin sees his oatmeal try to escape and chases after it, causing a mess. When Mom returns and sees the destruction, she takes her anger out on Dad, blaming him for being the reason why they don't have a girl, while he can do nothing but sheepishly sit there. Mom's anger is well-founded, sure, but the fact that she decides to go after Dad for literally nothing really does set the tone for this particular freakout.

The Tub Monster

Calvin and Hobbes December 21 1986

Parenting in Calvin and Hobbes comics can vary from strip to strip, including how extreme Mom gets when dealing with Calvin's antics. But her freakout in this strip is pretty justified.

Calvin, imagining himself as a Godzilla-like beast, emerges from the tub and goes downstairs to confront "Megalon," making a mess in the process. Not only that, but he spits a large amount of water on Mom, causing even more trouble, ending the strip with her chasing Calvin back up the stairs. Many times Mom has had to chase Calvin down for one reason or another, but this freakout definitely shows just how much she can take before she snaps and brings down harsh punishments.

Self-Haircut

Calvin and Hobbes May 18 1987

Out of all the funniest Calvin and Hobbes comics over the years, ones that is highly underrated was the arc where Hobbes cuts Calvin's hair, which culminates in this strip when Mom finds out.

While this isn't the most intense freakout from her, she still is visibly shocked and horrified at what Calvin has done - or rather, what Hobbes has done. Her freakout is mostly stemming from the surprise that Calvin would actually cut his iconic spiky yellow hair. Still, in a series that mostly shows Mom going ballistic over what Calvin has done, sometimes it's nice to see something like this - especially since no punishment apparently comes from this incident, as there's not really anything anyone can do but wait for Calvin's hair to grow back.

Frog Dinner

Calvin and Hobbes June 14 1987

Calvin's love of things that may seem disgusting or creepy has led to him sharing his love with his parents - with not great results, as this strip clearly indicates.

In this one, Calvin's imagination about seeing himself as tiny and being saved from a giant bug by a frog. He then puts this frog on Mom's plate, causing her to seriously freak out, as any sane person would when faced with a surprise amphibian friend on their plate. Though it's not shown what Calvin's punishment is for causing her so much distress, it was probably a steep one given how horrified Mom looks in the final panel.

Mud In The House

Calvin and Hobbes July 31 1988

Calvin's adventures often get him filthy, which leads to long baths. But sometimes, he gets away with getting into the house extremely muddy before anyone notices, leading to further freakouts from Mom.

This strip is one of her more insane reactions, though readers don't see her personally; rather, they hear how much she freaks out about Calvin getting mud all over the house. Her screams of shock and anger show just how furious with Calvin's lack of judgment in this case. It's enough to give readers a chance to imagine Mom's face as she realizes just how much cleaning she's going to have to do to get rid of all the mud.

The Break-In

Calvin and Hobbes April 29 1989

One of the most emotionally devastating comics in Calvin and Hobbes was the story arc in which the family is robbed while they were going to a wedding. It's also an arc with one of Mom's biggest freakouts ever.

Obviously, this freakout is well warranted. Anyone would react this same way upon seeing that their house was broken into. The look on Mom's face - that sheer mixture of horror, shock, and terror - says it all. She has never had any sort of expression like this before, no matter how much trouble Calvin has gotten into in the past, proving even more that nothing Calvin does could ever compare to something has horrifying as a burglary.

Hiding In The Chimney

Calvin and Hobbes March 20 1990

One of the funniest running gags in Calvin and Hobbes is Calvin's attempts to avoid baths, which leads to him trying to hide in various hiding spots. Often enough, these hiding spots make him get even more dirty.

In this strip, Calvin clearly tried to hide in the chimney, which led to him getting completely covered in soot. Needless to say, Mom clearly freaks out upon seeing just how filthy he's become. It doesn't help the situation when she's been searching for Calvin everywhere and getting more frustrated with his hiding. Being frustrated prior to finding an even dirtier Calvin certainly leads to an even bigger freakout.

Dead Bugs In The Shampoo

Calvin and Hobbes July 29 1990

Calvin loves pulling pranks, especially on his parents. Unfortunately, Mom and Dad are usually unappreciative when he does these pranks, leading to some hilarious freakouts.

In this freakout, Calvin has apparently just put a bunch of dead bugs in Mom's shampoo - something that she doesn't find out until it's too late. As such, she very rightly freaks out and more or less chases Calvin off, all the while still wearing a towel. Calvin's prank clearly went the way that he wanted, though Mom is rightly ticked off with what he did.

Dinnertime Fight

Calvin and Hobbes November 4 1990

Calvin's war with the green slop that he's forced to have for dinner seemingly every day is endless, especially when he imagines it coming to life. Often this leads to fights with the goo - and later, Mom.

Such is the case in this strip when he has a mini food fight with the green slop. As he finally catches it, Mom stumbles onto the scene, looking extremely ticked off. No words are given from her, but her facial expression tells the reader all they need to know about the severity of this freakout. Calvin's actions in the last panel - in which he calls the local navy recruitment office - also shows that he's more than a little scared about the mood Mom's in and what punishment she'll inflict on him.

Hitting Rocks In The House

Calvin and Hobbes April 17 1991

When Calvin messes up, he tends to try to go with a lame excuse to get himself out of trouble, never succeeding and leading to him getting into even bigger trouble, such as when he decided to hit rocks inside the house.

The opening two panels shows the height of Mom's freakout in this instance, showing first shock that Calvin would do something that dumb, and then anger when questioning why he would do something like this. Calvin's lame response just makes her freakout worse, and leaves her wondering why she has a kid that has no common sense. Unfortunately for her, this would probably not be the last time Calvin wrecks the house.
