Last week, the creator of the Dead Space series, designer Glen Schofield, debuted his newest project during The Game Awards 2020The Callisto Protocol. The trailer for the upcoming third-person survival horror title gave off some serious Dead Space vibes, and as Schofield says, that's just his style.

The Callisto Protocol's survival horror-esque trailer showed an unnamed inmate waking up in a cell to see a hologram directing a crew to a dock before the inmate is attacked by a shadowy creature. Schofield revealed at The Game Awards that The Callisto Protocol takes place in 2320 in Black Iron Prison on Jupiter's Moon, Callisto. Schofield said that the goal was to make "the single most scariest game for PC and consoles." Apparently, he drew from his experience on Dead Space to do just that.

In an interview with Polygon, Schofield noted that The Callisto Protocol will honor Dead Space while still standing on its own. He said that he has a "particular style" that he can't get away from. His style has matured and improved, but yet, it is still the same style Schofield put into Dead Space. He acknowledged that there will likely be some familiar vibes in The Callisto Protocol, but that's because he wanted the game to be "natural" using the style that he knows so well.

Schofield also spoke about what led to him create this survival horror game and strive to make The Callisto Protocol a "quadruple-A" game. He said that he loves horror and sci-fi and he's a big fan of those films. While the last 10 years working on Call of Duty have been great for Schofield, but "it was time to get back to something that I just really love."

It may not be entirely surprising to know that Schofield drew inspiration from Dead Space, another futuristic survival horror series that turned out to be a critical and commercial success. Fans have loved Dead Space's stories from the start, and bringing that same style to next-generation consoles is sure to deliver next-level terrors. What is surprising is that The Callisto Protocol also draws connections to PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, a battle royale with really no sci-fi elements at all. The Callisto Protocol will incorporate the PUBG universe, though it's not entirely clear how just yet. Fans will just have to wait for more updates before The Callisto Protocol's release in 2022.
