Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 6 is getting its first Double XP event this weekend. The new season began earlier this week, and could end up being the final season of content for the shooter. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to release next month, bringing the annual franchise to next gen consoles with a powerful focus on the historical event for which it is named; a focus that shines through even in the game's zombie survival mode. While the new game is bringing a lot of exciting features, it will likely also bring about the end of support for Modern Warfare.

But while fans await the future of Call of Duty, they've still got a few treats to enjoy in the present. The new season brings several updates, both to Modern Warfare and its standalone spinoff Warzone. The battle royale game sees the addition of a new subway system that makes for safe transport around the Verdansk map but also introduces numerous prime ambush opportunities. While that is certainly a very engaging new addition, the new season has not been without faults. Most notably, players have recently been reporting widespread server crashes following the release of Season 6.

Fortunately for players unaffected by these issues, Activision is still offering a lot of support in season 6. On Twitter earlier today Call of Duty announced the season's first Double XP Weekend. The event is live now, and will be lasting through October 5th. While it's active players can enjoy not only double XP for themselves but for their weapons as well. XP tiers are also doubled throughout the event, making it easier for players to rank up on the Battle Pass and get a strong head start on everything the new season has to offer.

This is an exciting opportunity for a lot of Call of Duty players to enjoy the best that the final season has to offer, but as a few fans on Twitter have pointed out, it's also a bit of an odd choice. Rushing players through progression this early into the new season seems a bit unwise; dedicated players might use this boost to finish off the battle pass before the weekend is over, and then there isn't nearly as much incentive to keep coming back for the rest of the season. One almost wonders if that's intentional. Activision might be using systems like this to incentivize players to make the switch when Black Ops Cold War comes out next month. Then again, Warzone isn't going anywhere; Activision confirmed that the spinoff will connect to Black Ops Cold War just as much as it connects to Modern Warfare.

Activision's decision to open up with a double XP weekend is confusing, but it should still be very exciting for a lot of fans. For better or worse, Season 6 is starting off with a bang, and since it's probably the last season Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will ever see, that's likely as it should be. Here's hoping the rest of season 6 lives up to expectations.
