When Activision announced that they would be releasing Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, fans were skeptical about its futuristic bend. And, Although the game's release last month saw some positive reviews, it hasn't been the most popular COD installment by far. In fact, Many fans have found the best part of Infinite Warfare to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, an update to the franchise's classic 2007 title.

The Call of Duty franchise is well-known for its seemingly endless multiplayer content that can keep players entertained for months, or even years, on end. Those fans who have been chipping away at Modern Warfare Remastered since November are in for a treat, then, as yesterday Activision announced that they were releasing brand new content for the game -- just in time for the holidays.

In a post to their blog, Activision revealed their "'Tis the Season" update to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, which primarily consists of six new maps, a loot drop called "Operation Arctic Wolf" that features a ton of new custom content, and, perhaps most interestingly -- the game's first female soldiers. Check out a trailer for the update, chock-full of gameplay footage, above.

It makes sense that Modern Warfare Remastered would eventually include female soldiers, as the name itself denotes a certain acknowledgement of the modern reality of the U.S. Marine Corps, of which women make up roughly 6.2% (or around 11,000 soldiers), according to recent statistical analysis. The original release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare did include a female helicopter pilot in one of the story missions, and female soldiers have appeared in the franchise since then.

This isn't much of a win for female gamers looking for good representation, nor is it a loss for those fans of the franchise who may see this move as too political or unrealistic. In the end, this retroactive introduction of women into the Modern Warfare universe really doesn't change anything. The female characters in question are NPCs, and they're an Easter egg hidden in an update hidden in a tie-in exclusive game.

Really, this update is not so monumental, but it will undoubtedly be a must-play for fans looking for a humorous, seasonal edge to their gameplay this winter. The "Ugly Sweater" weapon camo makes the update worthwhile all by itself.

Holiday updates for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered are currently available across all platforms.
