Players are reporting a glitch in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War that causes PS5 controllers to disconnect without provocation. The game released today for current and next-gen consoles, and is the first entry in the annual shooter franchise to cross the generational gap. Developer Treyarch put a lot of work into integrating the game with the next generation, to the point where the game uses the PlayStation 5 controller's haptic feedback to make every gun feel different.
Black Ops Cold War stands out from other games in the series, and not just because it's breaking ground on new consoles. The game boasts an immersive story campaign that sees players unraveling a deep conspiracy at the behest of Ronald Reagan himself. Campaign levels displayed before release demonstrate a commitment to the Black Ops experience, including one mission that sends the player undercover at KGB headquarters. Combined with new additions to the fan-favorite Zombies mode and a refined multiplayer experience, Black Ops Cold War has been a hotly anticipated title for some time now.
Unfortunately, launch hasn't been great for some people. Charlie Intel (via Game Rant) has reported that players are already encountering a glitch with the new game on PlayStation 5. This glitch causes the player's controller to randomly disconnect from the game without warning or provocation. In a fast-paced shooter like Call of Duty, no longer being able to control one's character is a death sentence. The bug has been reported to occur not just in the singleplayer campaign, but in the Zombies mode and in online multiplayer. The bug reportedly impacted PS4 players during the game's beta period, but it was addressed by Treyarch back then. Now that it's resurfaced on PS5, there's been no word from the developer, at least not at the time of this writing.
The transition to next-gen is a difficult one for a lot of people, including even the makers of the consoles themselves. Players are reporting all sorts of issues with the new machines; for instance, several Xbox Series X consoles are reportedly shutting off completely at random, seconds after a player tries to start a game. The transition to the new, advanced hardware is a difficult one, and it's understandable that a game would have issues making the leap.
That doesn't mean these issues should go unaddressed. A total and abrupt lack of control is a problem for any game, let alone one like Call of Duty. Treyarch still has time to patch up Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, but it had better act fast. This is the kind of bug that players won't have a lot of patience for.
