The patch notes for Call of Duty: Warzone Season Four reveal that developer Raven Software managed to incorporate a 120fps mode into the free-to-play title's PlayStation 5 iteration. This may come as surprising news to some since other developers previously noted that enabling 120fps gameplay on PS5 hardware was a near-impossible task without a developing a native PS5 port.

Discourse around running a game at 120hz on PS5 hit the ground running when Rocket League's next-gen upgrade added a 120fps mode on Xbox Series X but skipped the Sony platform. Apparently, Sony's solution to backward compatibility wouldn't allow for such an advanced gameplay option. Frame rate-boosting updates for Call of Duty: Warzone and Star Wars: Squadrons similarly revealed the PlayStation console's limitations in this regard. The tide is turning now, however, evidenced by recent news of DOOM Eternal's forthcoming next-gen update. According to details shared by id Software, DOOM Eternal's imminent Performance Mode on PS5 will run at an impressive 120fps in a resolution of 1584p. The tech wizards at id aren't the only ones to have deciphered the magic solution it seems.

In the patch notes for Call of Duty: Warzone's fourth season, which went live today, June 17, Raven Software unveiled the addition of the much-coveted 120fps option on PlayStation 5. As the "General" section of the latest changelog notes, HDM1 2.1 is necessary to take advantage of Warzone's newly implemented frame rate mode on PS5.

Everything New In PS5 April Update 2021

As of now, it remains a mystery as to whether or not this change comes courtesy of an update in PlayStation 5's firmware. It's also possible that Raven Software unlocked a way on its end to kick things into high gear. Regardless, the ins and outs of how exactly the studio managed to achieve such a feat isn't known for the time being; thus, it's hard to know whether titles such as Rocket League could similarly enable 120fps via PS5 backward compatibility.

Call of Duty: Warzone players across all platforms can hop into Season 4 now, which introduces a host of new additions. For instance, the Ground Fall limited-time event is available to explore, along with the "bite-sized FPS survival" mode Verdansk Resurgence Mini.
