The first Call Of Duty League Hype Battle is coming this weekend, and none other than Michael B. Jordan is set to headline it. The award-winning star of Black Panther and the Creed series recently announced his involvement with the event, right on the heels of entering the world of eSports last month.
In celebration of the popular first-person shooter franchise’s success and influence in pop culture all around the world, the Call Of Duty League is beginning a new event at eSports competitions called the Call Of Duty League Hype Battle. These showcase events will feature celebrity players as they face off in such modes as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s 2v2 ‘Gunfight,’ allowing fans to cheer on some of the biggest names in entertainment as they go head-to-head in gaming combat.
According to the Call Of Duty League press release, Michael B. Jordan will be a part of the first Hype Battle event on January 26, where he will partner up with NBA star and Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Andrew Wiggins against fellow Timberwolf Karl-Anthony Towns and rapper Vince Staples. Jordan himself spoke of his love of the Call of Duty series in response to the news. “I have to have some passion for it. Call of Duty, if anybody knows me, they know that’s my shit.”
After some humble beginnings on the small screen with roles on Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, Jordan won over the hearts of moviegoers as fledgling boxer Adonis "Donnie" Johnson in the 2015 Rocky spin-off Creed and its 2018 sequel, as well as the vengeful Erik “Killmonger” Stevens in 2018’s Black Panther. However, the Hype Battle will be his first major outing as an eSports competitor following his investment in Andbox, the NYC-based owners of the Call of Duty League’s Subliners team, back in December.
Ever since the first Call Of Duty game was released back in 2003, the series has evolved from a simple World War II-based FPS to a massive gaming franchise spanning multiple console generations and eras of warfare. This success is made apparent through the enthusiasm of such big names as Michael B. Jordan and Andrew Wiggins, as well as countless fans, players, and eSports competitors all throughout the world.
