The reveal of  Call of Duty 2021 may decide the future of one of the franchise's top eSports players, Seth Abner AKA OpTic Scump. The acclaimed competitive player noted that he's waiting for the reveal of Call of Duty 2021 before renewing his contract, signaling some unhappiness with the direction the series has been heading in from at least one pro player.

Rumors have indicated Call of Duty 2021 is in trouble, though publisher Activision has done much to combat those rumors. It is unlikely fans will find out the truth until closer to launch, but the rumors seem to have rattled pros like OpTic Scump. The longtime Call of Duty player is a fan of the series but has certainly been willing to criticize the franchise, sometimes resulting in fines from the Call of Duty League (CDL). It seems the rumors may be pushing him away from guaranteeing a return to the series, as he's not committing to renewing his contract this year.

Although Activision has yet to confirm any details beyond the fact Sledgehammer Games is developing this year's title, rumors indicate that Call of Duty 2021 is a WWII title, which worries some fans. Scump voiced hesitation (via Dexerto) about this year's entry after a fan expressed excitement about his performance in the next game, noting he may not renew his contract, which expires this year.

“Dude, I’m gonna have to see – listen my contract’s up this year. I’m gonna have to see what that sh*t looks like before I sign another one… I’m gonna have to see that. I’m gonna need a gameplay trailer. Because I don’t know about all that. I gotta see that. I’ve heard a whole bunch of different things – I don’t know what to think.”

Call of Duty 2021 WWII Sequel

Of course, it's not clear if Scump has heard things independently of the various reports online. It's possible he's been told things directly that are even further cause for concern, but it's not known. Rumors suggest Call of Duty 2021 will be quite traditional, with reputable insider Tom Henderson even going as far to say that it'll likely feel more akin to Black Ops Cold War 2.0. Given some fans, including Scump, expressed frustration with how various issues were handled with the latest title, so that may not spark optimism.

With games like Battlefield 2042 and Halo Infinite releasing this year, it's possible some pro players just may not want to play a watered-down Call of Duty and would rather spend their time on something they actually enjoy. Either way, the fact that Scump is remotely hesitant is yet another red flag for Call of Duty 2021 and should prove interesting if he chooses not to renew his contract at the end of the year.
