Caitlyn Jenner supports Dave Chappelle in the middle of controversy over his Netflix special. The comedian's recent comedy special, The Closer, continues to garner a massive uproar over some of his jokes which have been deemed transphobic. In the midst of the outrage, many people, including comedian Hannah Gadsby, have condemned the special, with some calling for its removal from Netflix and numerous Netflix employees staging a walkout in protest. Meanwhile, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos defended the special citing creative freedom, though later apologizing for the way he conducted his response after receiving criticism for various statements including that The Closer does not "directly translate to real world harm."
Chappelle has since continued to hold firm in his stance, recently releasing a video blaming "corporate interests" as well as restriction of what he is able to say. He also stated that he would be open to having a discussion, but will not be "summoned" or "bending to anyone's demands" regarding his special, which contains his support of J.K. Rowling and his jokes about transgender women. Chappelle is currently on tour and has been promoting his untitled documentary, which has been pulled from film festivals due to the controversy.
Now, Jenner has taken to social media to speak out on her views of the matter. Jenner voices support for Chappelle saying he is "100% right" and calling the controversy "woke culture run amok," while encouraging free speech and supporters to not back down. Her post can be viewed below:
Jenner publicly came out as a trans woman in 2015 and is one of the most recognized transgender women in the world. Though she has activated for transgender rights, many of her views have been condemned by the transgender community and LGBTQ+ activists. The statement of support comes despite Chappelle also joking about Jenner in his special, specifically her "Woman of the Year" award by Glamour magazine back in 2015. Chappelle has also received support from the family of the late transgender comedian, Daphne Dorman, who was referenced in his special and also defended his jokes on the community.
Chappelle is currently still on tour and The Closer remains on Netflix. While there have been open discussion on both ends, there is persistence on standing ground on each side. Everyone certainly has the right to their opinion as well as the right to be offended when something is considered displeasing or concerning. It is difficult to collectively determine how to balance creative freedom while trying to appeal to the general audience or brand without causing impassioned division. While Jenner is undoubtedly entitled to her opinion on the matter, her post and support for Chappelle will certainly be controversial.
