CBS Films is chasing down Gerard Butler, Colin Farrell and Matthew Fox as possible candidates to star as undercover CIA counter-terrorism agent Mitch Rapp Consent to Kill for director Antoine Fuqua.
The film, which is based on a novel by Vince Flynn is hoped to be the first in a potential franchise as there are eleven books (11!) in the series - although Consent to Kill isn’t the first. The character of Mitch Rapp apparently “possesses the killing machine qualities and ruthlessness of Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer.”
According to Deadline:
"In the Jonathan Lemkin scripted adaptation, Rapp battles a Saudi billionaire who is out for revenge (Rapp killed his terrorist son in the earlier book Memorial Day). Rapp has to contend with a German spy and a husband and wife assassin team who've been hired to kill him, along with bureaucrats in the government who want to do Rapp harm. All this puts Rapp’s wife and unborn child in grave danger, and when the stuff hits the fan, Rapp becomes a character reminiscent of Denzel Washington in Man On Fire."
As far as casting goes, Butler is said to be at the top of the list - after all he is the obvious choice for the man of action. Fox on the other hand is (according to Deadline) "aggressively" pursuing the role, as he sees it as a stepping stone to big screen success once Lost ends. Farrell however, impressed Films CEO Amy Baer when he starred in SWAT while she worked at Columbia Pictures. Other actors who have apparently been considered for the role include Keanu Reeves and Mad Men's Jon Hamm, but it is believed that only Butler, Fox and Farrell remain on the list.
Ideally, I’d love to see Farrell get the role. I feel that he never got the opportunity to have the success that he deserved due to tabloid shenanigans and this could be the opportunity to launch him into the A-list stratosphere. Butler on the other hand just seems like the easy and obvious choice, while I think that Fox lacks the charisma to pull off a big screen franchise.
With CBS looking to start shooting Consent To Kill this summer, expect them to pull the trigger on casting soon – and when they do, you can read it here on Screen Rant.
