Ever since a reboot of Joss Whedon's beloved television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, was announced, the news has been heralded with much speculation regarding exactly how the show could be remade; here's everything we know so far about what's on the horizon.

The original show piggybacked off the plot of the 1992 movie of the same name, which was directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui and written by Joss Whedon. The movie starred Kristy Swanson in the titular role alongside Riverdale's Luke Perry, veteran actor Donald Sutherland, and horror icon Rutger Hauer. The television series, which began in 1997 and ran for seven seasons until 2003, shook up the cast and put Sarah Michelle Gellar in the title role; it was far more popular and ascended to cult classic status. To this day, it still is infinitely binge-watchable and has a dedicated, loyal fan following almost twenty years after being off the air. The television show's canon continued through a series of comic books from Dark Horse, and was recently rebooted in comic form from Boom! Studios.

Other beloved '90s and 2000s television series of a similar lean, such as Charmed, have been rebooted for a new generation; while not always a popular choice with fans, there are merits to a well-done reboot and a solid argument for bringing back both beloved characters and stories for the next generation to enjoy.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot Release Date

The reboot for Buffy the Vampire Slayer was announced in July of 2018. As of this writing, no further information regarding a release date has surfaced. While two years does seem like a long time to go without an attached release date, there was no script for the series when it was first brought up as a prospective project, and there's no network attached yet. Because Disney now owns 20th Century Fox and Hulu, there has been some speculation that Buffy the Vampire Slayer could go to Hulu or Disney+ instead of network television. The project is also being developed at Fox 21 TV studios, which is the cable streaming division of 20th Century Fox. There's also speculation that the Buffy reboot could go to The CW, which rebooted Charmed, because it is the successor to The WB, which was the network that first aired Buffy.

While Joss Whedon is still involved with the project as an executive producer, Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas) is the writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the reboot. Owusu-Breen has previously collaborated with Whedon on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and has also worked with JJ Abrams on AliasLost, and Fringe. While some may be disappointed that Whedon isn't taking point on the reboot, Owusu-Breen has sought to ease concerns by stating that she has a long history of loving the series and intends to approach the reboot as a fan. Also adding to connections from the original series, Gale Berman, Fran Rubel Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Joe Earley are acting as executive producers on the project as well. Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz have both said they will not be involved with the reboot, but other cast members including James Marsters (Spike) and Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) have shown interest.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot Story Details

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Finale

The story behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer's reboot is still largely unknown. However, it has been said that the new series seeks to expand on the existing mythos of the Buffy-verse. The producers have been quoted as saying, "like our world, it will be richly diverse, and like the original, some aspects of the series could be seen as metaphors for issues facing us all today". Another rumor that has surfaced is that the new Slayer could be played by an African-American actress. If this is true, it could bring race relations and political power dynamic into the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which has endured for almost thirty years.
