There is no shortage of absolutely revolting monsters within the Buffy the Vampire Slayer franchise both in terms of the comics and the television series–however, one of them stands above the rest as being the all-time grossest monster ever, and it's one that is actually reminiscent of a popular meme in real life.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer follows Buffy and her friends/fellow heroes Willow and Faith (to name a few) as they work to eradicate all traces of evil from their world. Buffy, chosen by fate, was born a Slayer–someone who is inherently gifted at killing all things supernatural and dangerous. While Buffy excels at killing vampires, the blood-sucking undead aren’t the only creatures she comes across. Throughout her career, Buffy has faced off against werewolves, witches, and even robots. However, none of them compare to the most disgusting one of them all: a spaghetti monster.

In The Vampire Slayer #5 by Sarah Gailey and Sonia Liao, Buffy, Willow, and Faith are fighting a demon known as Macaroniphalus, a demon within the Buffy mythos that is described as being, “made of sentient bucatini”. Long tendrils of what looks like spaghetti encompass the demon’s torso, slipping and sliding through and around the demon’s body in a perpetual stir of pasta covered in dripping sauce. While the sight of the demon is disgusting enough, it gets so much worse when it’s revealed what the creature does to its victims with those tendrils–which are called ‘ovipositors’. According to Faith, who had encountered this thing before, the Macaroniphalus’ goal is to spread itself through living hosts by way of incubation. As Faith describes, “Yeah, incubation is their whole deal. They reproduce by planting eggs in your stomach lining”.

Another Spaghetti Monster Actually Has a ‘Religious’ Following Outside of Buffy

he concept of a giant spaghetti monster chasing after its victims is incredibly disturbing, but the fact that it actually reproduces by planting eggs in one’s stomach is utterly revolting and goes far beyond the scale of ‘disgusting monsters’ set by previous villains shown in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. What is interesting, however, is how much this creature resembles a popular ‘religion’ that has popped up in memes across the internet for years: The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. This ‘church’ seemingly aims at criticizing organized religion, primarily Christianity, and the weight it has on modern society in a manner that seems to be a satirical, atheistic thought experiment, though the Church of the FSM’s website would argue against that notion. In the About section of the church’s website, it claims that any and all traces of humor or satire associated with the Flying Spaghetti Monster is purely coincidental.

While the aesthetics of both the Macaroniphalus and the Flying Spaghetti Monster are similar, one is in no way associated with the other in any way that is confirmed by either the church or the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic. Plus, if it was a contest between which of the two was more horrifying, the Macaroniphalus wins hands down because it not only looks gross, but its way of reproducing is more disgusting than even that of Alien’s Xenomorphs–making the Macaroniphalus not just grosser than the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but also all other monsters within the established universe of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
