Buffy Summers is the titular character in the iconic TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and throughout the course of this long running show, Buffy understandably and expectedly evolved, both internally and externally. One of the most distinct and unique aspects of Buffy herself was her appearance and style, which always seemed to both be a reflection of her characterization overall and which transformed drastically throughout the seasons.
Buffy started off the show as a bubbly and slightly ditzy superhero, and she ended it as a complex character who retained all of her fun qualities but that had evolved with so many different dimensions that she felt like a completely different person. And this is Buffy Summers' transformation through the show, in pictures.
Season 1 - Welcome To Sunnydale
The Buffy The Vampire Slayer TV series started at the middle-end of the 1990's, and it's not hard to tell considering the style of the cast members, including Buffy Summers herself.
At the beginning of the show Buffy was a pretty quintessential 90's girl from California, and in the first season of the series she seemed to be particularly fond of pastel and neutral colors as well as miniskirts, which really seemed to reflect the lightness of her character.
Season 2 - Vampy Style
Season 2 presents a pretty seamless continuation of Buffy's season 1 style, with a few slight changes and evolutions.
While a lot of her styling choices and wardrobe pieces look pretty similar to her earlier self, a lot of her fashions seem to be a little bit more on brand with the overall theme of the series, her looks occasionally incorporated slightly more gothic and romantic styles than her earlier choices.
Season 2 - Becoming Buffy
As a series overall, Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the most part has a slightly timeless quality to it, and that really started at the end of season two. The earlier Buffy Summers felt very of the moment, but this is when Buffy's style took a turn towards slightly more unique fashion, hair, and makeup.
It still has a bit of a 90's vibe to it, but it's clear that Buffy is taking a turn away from trendy clothes that will go out of style quickly.
Season 3 - Prom Protector
The biggest and most solid jump in Buffy's overall transformation seems to have taken place in season 3.
It was the beginning of the straight haired, bright blonde version of Buffy that became a mainstay throughout the rest of the series, and it's here where her overall look seems to have become completely timeless. It's pretty impressive that even things like her prom dress don't look that dated today.
Season 4 - Slayers Gone Wild
Buffy had a hard time adjusting to college initially, but clearly after she got over that first awkward bump in the road she really started to find herself and started to love her slayerness.
Buffy always loved to strike a balance between girly and edgy, and it seems like she has a bit of extra edge now that she's arrived a UC Sunnydale.
Season 5 - A Flash Of Fun
Season 5 is arguably the most serious season in the history of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but the looks that Buffy was rocking didn't always project that air of seriousness.
In a fairly brilliant stroke of styling choices, Buffy's fashions seemed to be quite fun and immature in the episodes leading up to her mom Joyce's sudden and unexpected death, and unsurprisingly Buffy got a lot more serious looking afterwards.
Season 5 - Getting More Serious
When you're the chosen one, you don't get vacation time or bereavement leave. Buffy faced the most serious tragedy in her life when her mother died, but that didn't negate the fact that she had a hellgod that needed to be defeated.
It seems like Buffy adopted her toughest appearance in this era of the series, and that certainly melds well with the tough time that Buffy was going through.
Season 6 - Resurrected Fashion
Buffy died and came back from the dead for the second time in her relatively short life in season 6 of the show, and it's pretty obvious that the recently ripped from heaven slayer wasn't feeling her best at that point.
While Buffy was still stylish and cute, her general fashion sense was incredibly pared down and looked the most plain and somber that it ever did throughout the course of the show.
Season 6 - Double Duty
As the slayer, Buffy has been pretty isolated from the real world for a very long time. But with her mother gone, the responsibility of the Summers household was all on Buffy's shoulders, and that meant that she had to deal with many of the mundane issues of regular people.
And hilariously, one of those issues was money, and the solution to her money problems was a foray into fast food employment nightmares.
Season 7 - Matured Style
Unsurprisingly, Buffy's final on screen evolution also looks to be her most unique, stylish, and complex. Season 7 saw Buffy go from the chosen one to one of many, and despite the ups and downs she managed to defeat the First.
And in total Buffy Summers style, she managed to look cute as hell while doing it.
