Sarah Michelle Gellar has admitted that she and co-star Alyson Hannigan had heated arguments while filming the hit series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy, created by Joss Whedon, ran from 1997 to 2003. The series tells the tale of Buffy Summers (Gellar), a teenager who discovers she is the Slayer: the one chosen by fate to protect humankind against vampires and other demons. Over the years, Buffy was a major hit with audiences and critics alike, releasing several groundbreaking episodes and winning two Primetime Emmys over its seven-season run. Buffy's fanbase is still growing today despite the show being over for nearly two decades.

Author Evan Ross Katz has recently released a book entitled Into Every Generation a Slayer is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Heart, which details the behind-the-scenes story of creating this landmark show. Of course, a considerable amount of the book is dedicated to the now revealed transgressions of series creator Whedon. Since the summer of 2021, many cast and crew members of Buffy and other Whedon projects have been coming forward about how the writer is often abusive to his female coworkers. The accusation has followed Whedon to his work on the DCEU's Justice League. However, Katz's book does not focus exclusively on this aspect of the Buffy story.

In an interview for Katz's book (as reported by Yahoo!), Gellar has admitted to other incidents on the set of the iconic series. Gellar has revealed that she and co-star Hannigan would have "heated" arguments occasionally despite the two playing best friends Buffy and Willow on the show. While Gellar does not give specific details on the arguments, she has admitted that many of them were borne out of being young and working such long hours on Buffy. See her full quote below:

"“Look, we worked really hard hours. We were young, we had ups and downs. Everybody had arguments... Nobody gets along all the time. And Alyson [Hannigan] and I had moments. There’s no question. But you’re young."

Gellar has also admitted that she could sometimes be a handful while filming. As the lead of the series, Gellar was often working many more hours on Buffy than her co-stars, which led her to resent them. Ultimately, there was no "one problem" amongst the Buffy cast, rather a group of people who saw each other every day and were almost always tired. Gellar has even admitted that while he was always nice to her, Angel actor David Boreanaz "could be a handful." Ultimately, the lesson Gellar has decided to take away is that "anyone that tells you they get along with everyone all the time, it's just not true."

While it may be upsetting to hear that Gellar and Hannigan weren't always as close as Buffy and Willow were in the series, it will be comforting to know that no lasting damage was done. Ultimately, it seems that Katz's book tells the tale of many young actors coping together with being thrust into the world of stardom and television. Katz's book is likely to be a must-read on the list of any true Buffy fan. With talks of a Buffy reboot in the works, it may also be time for fans to give Buffy the Vampire Slayer another rewatch.
