Boom! Studios will be starting a new Angel miniseries, bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan-favorites like Angel and Cordelia. Buffy the Vampire Slayer still holds up today, running for seven seasons and spinning off into Angel, which ran for five seasons. Angel and Cordelia became quite the dynamic duo in the spin-off show and now the two are reuniting once more in the upcoming Angel comic book.

For twenty years, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and other comics in the Buffyverse were published by Dark Horse Comics, beginning back in 1998 in non-canonical stories followed by canon stories that served as Seasons Eight, Nine, Ten, and Eleven of the series. But in 2018, Boom! Studios acquired the rights to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and rebooted the universe through the multiverse. This relaunch sets the tales of Buffy and her friends in the modern-day, starting with a sort of retelling of the show's first season. Now, the company will be starting its own Angel comic book series.

Announced in an exclusive reveal on SYFYAngel will be an eight-issue miniseries taking place in an alternate reality of the Buffyverse. In this universe, Angel is still a vampire who solves supernatural cases, but he also plays a supernatural detective on television. He's filming this detective series with his co-star Cordelia, but a new threat may throw a wrench in the delicate balance between Angel's stardom and his Angel Investigations work. The piece on SYFY revealed the Jahnoy Lindsey (She-Hulk) variant cover for Angel #1 as well as two preview pages showing some moments between Angel and Cordelia topped off with some glaring humor.

The comic book is written by Christopher Cantwell, who was nominated for an Eisner because of his Doctor Doom series. He is also the writer of The Mask: I Pledge Allegiance to the Mask. Cantwell gushed: “I love writing character ensemble stories, stories about seemingly random individuals who suddenly find themselves trapped in the orbits of others.... Angel has one of the best ensembles to ever grace the TV screen, and theirs is a story about a family of choice." He went on to explain the feel of their interpretation with the series: "When BOOM! approached me, I leaped at the chance to honor and celebrate the original series in a fresh way, pulling on some loose threads and weaving new ones. It takes all the characters and plays 52 card pick-up with them, reshuffling their roles and identities into a literal alternate universe that LOOKS and FEELS like Angel, but is also something else entirely.”  The artwork is done by Daniel Bayliss, the artist of Labyrinth: Coronation and Firefly. Other key members of the creative team include colorist Patricio Delpeche (Origins) and letterer Becca Carey (Buffy the Vampire Slayer).

The first issue in the eight-issue Angel miniseries will be released in January 2022. For fans interested in other Buffyverse stories, Boom! Studios has plenty of plans for the universe, including an apocalyptic comic book in which Buffy's the world's last slayer. It's nice that these entries to the Buffyverse can be enjoyed without erasing the previous series that can still be loved from Dark Horse Comics.
