Cake Boss star Buddy Valastro has shared more details with his fans on his recovery since experiencing a severe hand injury back in September. Valastro, who is famous for baking extravagant cakes for Carlo’s Bakery, is the star of the TLC reality show. Cake Boss has been on the air since 2009 and has seen several spin-offs, including Next Great Baker, Kitchen Boss, Bake You Rich, and Bakery Boss.

Valastro originally injured his right hand on September 20. He was spending time with his family in their at-home bowling alley when a bowling pinsetter malfunctioned. As Valastro attempted to fix the pinsetter, the situation went horribly awry. His hand became lodged in the machine, and a metal rod impaled his hand three times between his ring finger and middle finger. Valastro said it was the worst pain he had ever encountered in his life. In total, it took 15 minutes to free his hand from the machine. Valastro has since undergone a series of three surgeries to repair the damage that was done.

According to People, the Cake Boss star underwent his third surgery on October 21, and his recovery continues to be slow but steady. Valastro admits he was in a bad place, mentally, at the beginning of the ordeal. He recalls waking up to night sweats of the incident reoccurring and vividly recalls the pain. However, he is trying to stay positive about the recovery process following his most recent medical procedure.

As of now, Valastro says even the simplest tasks are difficult, such as buttoning his pants and cutting food. One small victory is that he can finally hold a fork, and he is beginning to learn how to use his hand again in different ways. Valastro notes he is starting to realize how much he took for granted before the injury, including small things, like being able to wash his face. In true reality star fashion, Valastro is documenting his recovery in a TLC special, Buddy Valastro: Road to Recovery. It will debut on December 23, just in time for the holidays.

Until then, the Cake Boss star says he’s trying to just stay busy in between medical appointments by hosting events. He is also promoting his new Food Network program, Buddy vs. Christmas, which premieres on November 22. The series was filmed pre-accident. Hopefully, Valastro's recovery continues to go smoothly so the Cake Boss star can get back to doing what he loves sooner rather than later.
