Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5

Marvel Comics has just introduced Bucky Barnes' brand-new costume as the Winter Soldier, though it doesn't bode well for his future and friendship with Steve Rogers. As seen in the pages of Marvel's Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, Steve and Bucky's war with the massive new shadow organization known as the Outer Circle has taken an extremely dark turn. Now, it looks as though Bucky will soon don this new costume in the aftermath of a major betrayal.

Previously in Sentinel of Liberty from Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, and Carmen Carnero, the dark truth about Captain America's shield came to light, revealed to be a century-long symbol for the Outer Circle who control all aspects of global society with five leaders known as the Machine, Power, Love, Money, and the Revolution. The Outer Circle controls the two Inner Circles who obey and the star represents Captain America, their super-soldier and ultimate pawn. However, they also have Starpoints, 5 assassins who help them manipulate the board of their "Century Game". Having learned that he's been a Starpoint for years, Bucky's Winter Soldier joined forces with Captain America who's looking to redeem the symbol of his shield, the both of them refusing to be secret pawns any longer.

Will The Winter Soldier Become Marvel's New Revolution?

Winter Soldier Shoots Captain America and Revolution in Sentinel of Liberty #5

Regarding the "new persona" Bucky will be taking on, it seems very likely that the Winter Soldier will become the new Revolution after killing the original in Sentinel of Liberty #5, shooting Captain America in the process who had been standing in his way. Revealing to Steve that the Outer Circle set up his father to die and had the army intentionally recruit him so he could fight by Captain America's side, Bucky confirms he's been a pawn long before he became the Winter Soldier. As such, Bucky certainly seems willing to do whatever it takes to end the "Century Game" and the Outer Circle's control by starting a Revolution of his own (even if that means betraying Rogers).

With the major Captain America: Cold War event coming soon which will cross over with Sam Wilson's Captain America: Symbol of Truth, it looks as though Winter Soldier's new role and costume will play a major part in the war on the horizon for the Marvel Universe. Although it's certainly a dark new path for Bucky Barnes, here's hoping he can be redeemed by Captain America in the aftermath. Captain America & The Winter Soldier Special #1 releases November 6th.
