Dan Goor, the creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has revealed an idea the writers had in mind for a possible Bruce Willis cameo. The hit police sitcom that follows the day-to-day hijinks of the ninety-ninth precinct of the NYPD has come to an end after eight seasons. First airing in 2013, the show follows Detective Jake Peralta (played by Andy Samberg) and his colleagues through a multitude of unique cases, intense stake-outs, and most importantly, Halloween heists.

One of the many recurring gags throughout the series was Peralta's love of Die Hard and his desire to be just like his hero, John McClane (one of Willis' more iconic roles), with one episode even taking place at the Nakatomi Plaza, the iconic setting of the first Die Hard movie. The love of the movie ran so deep that Peralta's wife in the show, Amy Santiago (played by Melissa Fumero), even ordered their wedding cake to look like the Nakatomi, much to her husband-to-be's delight. As a result of the ongoing references, many fans of the show had rallied for Willis to make a cameo in the series, but unfortunately, despite Goor's best efforts, Willis' appearance didn't come to fruition.

In honor of the show's finale, Goor and the cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine appeared on Late Night With Seth Myers (via EW) to reminisce about their time on the show and answer some burning questions. One of the tweets they received referenced this longed-for appearance from Willis and asked if the writers had previously had any ideas in mind for how they would have the veteran actor cameo in the show. Should the opportunity have arisen, Goor shared an idea that had been thrown about the writer's room. Read Goor's full quote below:

"There are always pitches from a writers room that are like, the whole Nine-Nine is called out on a big case, and then he walks in and he's like, 'Hey, is there anyone here? No, I guess not,' and walks out."

Samberg also shared how he had pictured the interaction between Peralta and Willis playing out. In a slightly more heart-warming approach, Samberg added "I always just assumed it would be like, Jake sees him on the street and loses his mind. And he's like, 'Hey, you're doing good, kid.'" A number of other celebrities have made an appearance on the show across its eight seasons, including the likes of Nathan Fillion, Sterling K. Brown and Adam Sandler, to name just a few. The addition of Willis to the list would have served as a satisfying payoff for the eight-season-long joke.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is no stranger to the power of fandom, and while it may not have manifested in the form of a John McClane cameo this time around, it certainly has made an impact in other areas. Back in 2018, many were outraged when Fox canceled the show after just five seasons, with director Guillermo del Toro even taking to Twitter to call for the show to be picked up by another network. Thankfully, NBC stepped in to bring fans three more seasons of the beloved sitcom. While the writer's plans for Willis' potential cameo took a much more comedic approach and would have logistically been a lot easier to fit into a busy schedule, Peralta's emotional meeting with his lifelong hero would have been a real tear-jerking addition to an already emotional goodbye for many fans. Cameos aside, Brooklyn Nine-Nine's final season has been incredibly well-received and the beloved series will certainly be missed.
