NBC's Brooklyn Nine-Nine recently concluded its seventh season, with the eighth season currently under production. Created by workplace comedy veteran, Michael Schur (who also created The Office and Parks and Recreation), the show is known for its hilarious writing and characters and tackling deep real-life issues.

Charles Boyle, played by Joe Lo Truglio, is Jake's best friend and partner, and is one of the most likable characters in the sitcom, and is a great guy who always looks out for his friends. However, he is not without his flaws, and despite meaning well, he sometimes comes off as creepy and inappropriate. Here are 5 times he was a bad friend, and 5 times he was a great one.

Terrible - Gets Extremely Possessive of Jake

Charles is Jake's best friend, but sometimes that's hard to believe. Charles always starts feeling jealous every time Jake shows even the slightest inclination of befriending another guy. In "The 9-8", Jake reconnects with his former partner and Charles gets insanely jealous and possessive of Jake.

Even years after Jake returns from prison, and prepares to meet his former cellmate, Caleb, for his help on an ongoing case in the season 6 episode, "Sicko", Charles gets jealous and sourly reminds him that he was a cannibal and prisoners never change.

Great - Helps Build a Playhouse for Terry

Charles is always nice to everyone and is always ready to help out all his friends. In the season 1 episode, "The Slump", Terry is trying to build a dollhouse for his twin daughters, but he can't seem to complete the task. He's unable to build it, calling the pieces too small and the plans too complex.

Charles finds him struggling to build the dollhouse, and after Sarge gives up in defeat, Charles builds a castle for him, complete with a drawbridge and police cars in the front.

Terrible - Repeatedly Asks Out Rosa Despite Being Rejected

Many fans didn't really like Charles in the earlier seasons of the show, especially season 1, because although the character was quite funny and nice enough, he came off as quite creepy. One especially annoying and creepy character trait was his being in love with Rosa.

He repeatedly asked her out, and despite being gently let down by her every time, he thought he was being led on. Thankfully, the writers changed this dynamic quickly, and they now have one of the best and most wholesome friendships in the entire show.

Great - Throws Jake and Amy a Wedding

Jake and Amy are all set to be wed in the season 5 finale, "Jake and Amy", but Amy's nemesis calls in a bomb threat, saying he has planted a bomb in their wedding venue. To make matters worse, Teddy, Amy's ex, shows up as the bomb defuser and tells them that the wedding won't be able to happen.

However, they find out Boyle has thrown them a magnificent wedding right outside the precinct, and it looks absolutely beautiful, with the police lights and soft snowfall. Even Mlepnos shows up to perform a song for the happy couple.

Terrible - Yells at Gina and Amy Even Though They're Helping Him Out

After his employees "call in sick", Amy and Gina agree to help out Charles with his food truck. However, instead of being grateful, he becomes extremely bossy and keeps yelling at them. He keeps insisting that they're cutting the bread wrong and shouting at them.

He also reveals his employees haven't actually called in sick, they've quit because of Charles's horrible behavior. Although he apologizes later, he shouldn't have yelled at someone who was helping him out. In fact, Amy was actually an investor in Charles's business.

Great - Helps Jake Realize His Feelings For Amy

After winning the bet against Amy, all the way back in season 1, Jake plans an elaborate bad date to humiliate Amy, but Boyle makes him realize that Jake actually likes Amy and he should have an honest, mature conversation with her.

Once they do start dating, Charles also helps Jake come to terms with dating Amy, and advises him to stop trying to keep things "light and breezy", and helps him develop a meaningful relationship with her.

Terrible - Jake's Bachelor Party

Being his Best Man (or BM, as he calls it), Charles throws Jake an extremely complicated and elaborate bachelor party, which requires him to solve difficult puzzles and jump through hoops all day. He also "got kidnapped" right at the beginning, and didn't return all day.

And although he does go all out, even getting Jake the chance to meet Reginald VelJohnson,  Jake only wanted a simple dinner with his best friend. Charles did whatever he wanted, without even listening to Jake about what he wanted to do.

Great - Agrees to Teach Captain Holt Cooking

Charles Boyle teaches Captain Holt how to cook in Brooklyn Nine Nine

Charles is an excellent cook and a foodie, and so, in the season 2 episode, "The Road Trip", Captain Holt asks Charles to teach him how to make scrambled eggs so he can cook them for Kevin on their anniversary.

Even though Captain Holt keeps annoying him by refusing to listen to him and questioning and challenging Charles's every instruction, Charles continues to be patient and helpful, only stopping when Holt himself storms out.

Terrible - Inappropriate With Jake and Amy's Relationship

Amy, Charles and Jake

Charles is obsessed with Jake and Amy's relationship, often hilariously considering himself a part of it. Although it's played for laughs, he is surprisingly inappropriate with them both and is very invasive of their privacy, once even demanding them to kiss in front of him.

Charles also told Amy he's "hearing wedding bells" when she first met Jake on her first day at the 99, and Charles seems even more inappropriate once fans realize that Amy actually came to the 99 because of being sexually harassed in her previous precinct.

Great - Plans Rosa's Birthday Dinner with Marcus

Brooklyn Nine Nine Gina Linetti, Rosa Diaz and Charles Boyle

On Rosa's birthday, Boyle keeps trying to get Rosa to show up at Shaw's bar, and she figures out there's going to be a surprise party for her, but Boyle won't say anything about it. Although she hates parties, she angrily agrees to go just so Marcus's feelings won't be hurt.

However, on reaching the venue, Rosa finds only Marcus there, saying Boyle had helped him plan a romantic dinner for them, away from everyone. Rosa is visibly moved and hugs Boyle, something she refuses to do with anybody.
