Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8's premiere is delayed until 2021. Since moving over from Fox to NBC at the start of season 6Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been a consistent favorite in the network's comedy lineup. This was expected to be the first time the show aired in the fall at NBC, which has given the show shorter seasons beginning in the winter each of the last two years. Ultimately, it couldn't beat COVID-19 and reach its production goal.

TVLine reports Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 8 will be held until midseason, with an undetermined premiere date in 2021. That announcement came with the arrival of NBC's fall schedule, which doesn't feature a large amount of scripted shows, owing to production delays brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Other notable shows being pushed to 2021 include Manifest and New Amsterdam.

The premiere delay is disappointing, but it also gives the show ample opportunity to reckon with another American crisis: racism. Several episodes have already been dumped in response to the BLM movement. Writers of the show are now debating how to create a show about the police that is funny without propping up an institution entrenched in patterns of systemic racism. Even series star Andre Braugher will be keeping a close eye on his program.
